Oh dear. The gremlins have started
« on: 29 May 2011, 22:03:43 »

sold my last Omega some 13 years ago because it kept breaking down with sensors giving up the ghost.

Yesterday, after a month of ownership, the MV6 decided to keep breaking down to and from a hospital visit for my dad.

Luckily each time it did so i was able to coast it to the side of the road which bearing in mind its a auto was not fun.  Each time it brokedown it would not start for 10 minutes, then start as though it had nothing wrong with it and drive for 10 minutes then cut out again.

With my dad being 88 and me not wanting to stress him out too much, i eventually got it home ( after 5 such breakdowns) and called out the AA.  45 mins later they arrived and lo and behold the car is starting and idling just fine.  No fault codes either.

So decided to take it out for a drive and 3 miles down the road it cuts out.  This time the AA got there quick enough to catch it whilst it faied to start and got a code reading...."Engine Speed input" - Crankshaft sensor.

Got car towed into to my local Vxl where it will stay till Tuesday when the will run a Tech2 (£90+vat) as they don't belive the AA diagnostic and i have asked or the cranksensor to be changed.

Fingers crossed that will be the end of the problem as i do really like this car.... when it worked anyway. :-X

Highly likely to be cranksensor, easy to replace but heed the advice on here about re-routing the cable away from the exhaust manifold.

Crank sensor is approx £60 on tradeclub.

Taking it to the dealer will cost you the diagnostic plus an hour to fit the part plus the part.

Blimey.

You don't say on your profile what age the car is but a simple paperclip test  would have thrown up the code for crank sensor. The forum knows more than the average VX garage IMO. It would be a cold day in hell before I took my car to a VX garage ever again. problem is given your personal cicumstances you probably just want it sorting so you can get on with sorting family matters. Hope your Dad makes a speedy recovery and that the car doesn't cost too much. Why not just say to them fit a new crank sensor (and route it properly) and save the £90 Tech2 charge.?

Unfortunately :-[ i don't have the tools or the know how to tackle a self fix so almost always my cars end up with Vxl or a Vxl specialist or a friendly garage for fixes.  Costly i know but with leaving home at 7 am and not getting back till around 8pm have little other choise.  I was on my way to see a fellow Vxl enthusiast in Orpington when it broke down finally and no doubt he could have used his tech2 equipment but i had a choise of getting it towed to the garage, home or an alternative and if i got it towed to him and he couldn't fix it then the next tow was going to be difficult to get the aa to do.  So i chose the garage which i knew was still open at 5.30 on a saturday afternoon.

Cars a 2000- Y reg 3.2 auto with 94k.  On the motorway it runs like a dream with fuel consumption i wish my wifes Zaf gsi would aspire to match.  Around town its obviously a different story.

Fingers crossed it will ge fixed once and for all.

I always think why do i bugger about with my car myself, this just reminds me why! even after buying the wrong shocks for the back of my car and having to buy them twice i still think i came out cheaper than a garage, 377 pound seems very hefty to me but that's dealers for you.

I should hope your car is running well now after spending all that. Did you ask them for a break down of the costs? Even if they charged you a full hour's labour at £80/£90 and a crank shaft sensor at around £60 it'd have come to no where near £377.

I hope they haven't run it the way they always run it.

The charge needs questioning - less than 1hr work, and a £40+VAT part (3.2 takes cheaper sensor). Even at SE prices, tops £150+VAT...

Read the guide on here before you replace them.
