I assume the oil flows through the middle & outwards, so when the filter blocks, it gets pushed off the clips & the oil forces the filter to the end of the housing.

Oil always flows from the outside of a filter into the centre so either it clogged and the pressure crushed it or it wasn't properly on when the lid was tightened overtightened and it got crushed then.

To be honest, once they are being changed regularly and correctly torqued, the paper filters are no bother at all. No need to change to cartridge, IMHO.

Agreed - and best to use a HEXAGON (as opposed to bi-hexagon) type socket Jim  :y

Agreed ;)
But I didn't use my torque wrench when I did mine Thursday, maybe I'll be struck down  ::) :y

You and I both know that it needs to be (just) tight enough to seal, and can get the feel for when the seal is made. Its not one I use a torque wrench on (unlike most other engine jobs, where I absolutely do).

But we both know that the world is full of people, and to use a quote from one of my old bosses, "who isn't a big a **** as he thought he is", and will do it to 10,000,000 Nm, and that he has worked on loads of cars and is a Vx trained mechanic etc etc. "Warped cam covers" spring to mind ;)

These caps just need the tiniest nip.

I think part of the issue with these being overtightened isn't so much poor fitting though...  ...I think over time they tend to stick, and with 20k servicing (low milers seen to ignore the 2yr part!), it gives it plenty of time to stick solid.

My mum was disowned for marrying a Yok (derogatory term for a non Jew), but madly enough we (the children) are accepted  :-?

As per TheBoy though, I only ever tweak the oil filter just enough for it to get a seal because it will tighten itself over time anyway.

Aye, I've just tweaked the new cap on, hopefully when I do the next oil change it won't be stuck on :)
