The EU has decided.. mandatory electronic nannies.

From November this year, every time a car manufacturer introduces a new model in the EU it will have to have anti-skid technology called Electronic Stability Control fitted as standard.

From 2014 ESC will have to be included on every new car, even existing models.

A quote from the video:
Quote
Now on this [demonstration] car the system can be turned off, of course if you buy a car with ESC you can't turn it off

Now I agree the demonstration is impressive and I tend to agree that the vast majority of people need all the help they can get to avoid stuffing their cars into the armco/cars/pedestrians.. but personally I want to be able to turn that crap off to have fun!

Not to mention all these electronic gadgets are just breeding people who don't actually know the first thing about car control and just expect electronics to get them out of every situation (like the woman who got her brand new car stuck in snow and complained "But this is a new car, it shouldn't get stuck!" if I recall the posting correctly from earlier this year)

I've just turned into Nickbat/Banjax, haven't I?

Hmm. Personally I wonder whether, if they banned it, along with TC, ABS, power steering, airbags, automatic gearboxes, mobile phones and in-car entertainment perhaps we would see people driving properly?  ;)

I.E. both hands on the wheel and not dicking about with umpteen different gadgets while 0.05% of their concentration is diverted to not killing themselves? >:(

Kevin

EDIT: Oh, and kids to be carried in a separate (sound proof) compartment to the driver.

I'm with you on the last part ;) I've always thought that if you're going to ban phones then you really need to ban kids being carried in a passenger compartment that is visible and accessible from the drivers seat..

The number of times I see people (usually mothers) driving along while turned around fiddling with the kid in the back is astonishing.

Yeah, let's get rid of all that lame stuff that idiot drivers depend on so that we can enjoy really driving our cars. You know, things like synchromesh gears, power steering, servo-assisted brakes, independent rear suspension. Things were never the same after the 1920s.

Yeah, I'd absolutely be up for some of that. :y Perhaps more of the idiots would decide it's not for them and the roads would be reclaimed by those who take a modicum of pride in their driving.

I think we have to accept that along with other freedoms in life, driving a car how we like will go soon enough. What amazes me is that it hasn't been really started yet. :( :(
