Hmm. Personally I wonder whether, if they banned it, along with TC, ABS, power steering, airbags, automatic gearboxes, mobile phones and in-car entertainment perhaps we would see people driving properly? 

I.E. both hands on the wheel and not dicking about with umpteen different gadgets while 0.05% of their concentration is diverted to not killing themselves?

yes, I think we are a bit cosseted compared to how things used to be.

My son is learning to drive, and we passed a small one man garage who has about 15 Beetles all parked up. I remarked how they were fun to drive, and his comment was that without power assist it would be hard, steering would be hard work and as for braking, well.  

I need to get him an old non synchro land rover to learn in, that'll build up his muscles, and give an appreciation of where things came from !

Personally, I woundn't fancy driving my Omega round the block without PAS if im honest!  :-/

The main reason I bought it was because of all the toys!

That's what I passed my test in, with an Army driving instructor. Great fun, double de-clutch up and down the box, "L" plates, through the middle of Glasgow.

Mind you, people kept out of my way, wonder why  :-/

On a serious note, I suspect this'll be another nail in the coffin for the small independant car manufacturer (not that there are many left). Another black box won't be an issue for those stamping FWD shopping trolleys out by the million.

For a specialist low-volume car manufacturer, however, it will be a big deal because I imagine these systems require a lot of testing to calibrate them for each chassis.

I haven't ever really "played" in a car with ESC, but I can imagine that, once you get used to it sorting out all your bad habits, the one time when you manage to overstep it that little bit more, and render it helpless, it becomes a really lethal trouser-browner.

Pete,s merc (with ESC) had 3 of us pushing it for over an hour and it still wouldnt go up the little hill, finaLLy gave up,as the rrear brakes were smoking!! and let it stay on the side of the road

Now I agree the demonstration is impressive and I tend to agree that the vast majority of people need all the help they can get to avoid stuffing their cars into the armco/cars/pedestrians.. but personally I want to be able to turn that crap off to have fun!

Not to mention all these electronic gadgets are just breeding people who don't actually know the first thing about car control and just expect electronics to get them out of every situation (like the woman who got her brand new car stuck in snow and complained "But this is a new car, it shouldn't get stuck!" if I recall the posting correctly from earlier this year)

Yeah, let's get rid of all that lame stuff that idiot drivers depend on so that we can enjoy really driving our cars. You know, things like synchromesh gears, power steering, servo-assisted brakes, independent rear suspension. Things were never the same after the 1920s.
