My corsa 1.3CDTi steering problem is back! Thought I cured this by changing the PAS electric motor, but is has come back. Steering gets very stiff on tight manouvres, but is fine otherwise. INTERMITTENTLY. Oddly, only when the aircon is on.

Now, before those that don't know speak, the corsa has electric PAS not hydraulic. So, a motor on the colum helps push the column around. amount of assistance is varied by teh computer module, which I now suspect is suspect. (Sorry for the pun)

Anyone got expoerience of these? Can I change the module on the rack WITHOUT using tech 2? I have a complete spare column of course (like you do) and can poach anything I need for the job. Both from same year corsa's, but other one was in a petrol so may be programmed differently because of the weight of the diesel engine being much more.

Oh well, hear comes the abuse form certain DTM's with understanding of midget mobiles.

oh, I will. But I just need to know if the control module will need Tech II'ing afterwards? Not a bad job to changie it, just want to make sure I can use it afterwards. :-/

TBH i dont know......but what can the worst be.....its programmed as you say for a petrol.....so its assistance will be less.....if its not assisting as it should.....then a run down to TB would be in order

It's the interaction with the air con that's puzzling me. Why does it care if the air con's on or off?

I wonder if it's sensitive to supply voltage (it must be a heavy load, so maybe it shuts down under a certain battery voltage to allow extra running time) and extra load from the air con is upsetting it?

According to the info I have, it does not need telling which vehicle its in......there is a calibration process to follow each time the battery is disconnected...

Steering Angle Sensor (Vehicles with ESP), Calibrate

Note:  The ESP-steering angle sensor must be recalibrated each time the battery is disconnected from the on board power supply. The calibration can be undertaken using either of the two modes of procedure described below.

1. With ignition "ON", turn steering wheel to its full extent from left to right

or

2. with Tech2
  2.1.  Connect Tech2 and switch on
  2.2.  Select menu "Vehicle Diagnosis"
  2.3.  Select model year
  2.4.  Select vehicle "Corsa/Meriva"
  2.5.  Select "Chassis" system
  2.6.  Select "ABS/TC/ESP"
  2.7.  Switch on ignition and confirm by pressing the button
  2.8.  Confirm by pressing button when system identification has been completed
  2.9.  Select "Additional Functions"
  2.10.  Follow further instructions of diagnostic tester

Yes, I also read this somewhere Seems a bit odd that you can do such an easy calibration, or give it to jaime for a nightwmare plug and play session!

My main conncern was changing the modules and losing PAS completely. I will have a go on Sunday of changing just the module. If that doesn't work, then it will be the whole column.

I also noticed the rack or colum creaking yestereday. Again, only when aircon is on. So, I suspect the column or the module is geting very cold and causing a problem.

Still worth checking the battery voltage with air con on and off, I'd say. Try to measure the voltage at the module too, just in case there's a bad negative connection somewhere.
