The Volly D5 looks good. Also considering the bigger S80/C80? saloon. They do lovely C70 2 door coupe but i think they're only petrol...not sure. I'd love a Passat but not sure i could afford/find a low miler with the punchy engine same as Audi A3/4.

Still got an open mind & in no rush but i love my Vollies & if you get a good'un you can't go far wrong. One of the best cars to crash in as well if things get sticky!!! :y

S80's are just as good with more room, V70's are top notch as well, you can't go wrong with a Volvo, they're very reliable too, a mate of mine has had one since new in 2003, he has never actually replaced a part apart from servicing items  :y

If I was looking to go WWD in a smelly oil burner I'd be looking at a Volvo :y In fact, when I got my saloon I was actually planning to hold on a bit longer and get a D5 Volvo ;)

Hi Kate. Never had one but driven a couple & i'm nostagic enough to go & buy it but even with the upgrades & mile muncher it is'nt, i may as well take the Cortina!

Also has it had an engineeres report for the 1275 upgrade & is it registered as such? Insurance problems can arise.

Lovely old bus though as long as you have a grease gun & with that reg plate i'd have to name it sausage!!!! 8-)

Long journeys might be a problem on the back! And the handbrake is next to the drivers door!

Hi Guy,

I'd be very careful of Mk 3 TDci Mondys. They seem very fragile and liable to problems with injectors and DMFs.

I had an 06 2.2 Tdci ST - it was very comfy but got to 60k and then started playing up - as many do.

It's also a very noisy car - lots of road noise from the rear of the car - very noticible and quite tiring on a long journey TBH.

I've been pleasantly surprised by the French Hdi engines as I have a new shape C5 Hdi at work. Very good on fuel, very comfy and very quiet - but probably still a bit ££ as have only been out a couple of years now.

Regards - Rob

I guess so... First post below ;)

Which diesel car would you recommend for around the 2 or 3 grand mark? Later this year i'm giving my son Scott the MX5. I love it but getting in & out is'nt as easy as it was when i had my first one some 12/13 years ago so i'm going to enjoy it a while longer then grow up....a bit! I fancy a Passat, A4, Xtype Jag but will probably only get a high mile nail for the money so Focus, Pug 406/306 with low miles & history might be more realistic. Quite fancy a volvo but don't know much about them...Sorry but nothing from Vauxhall. I know it'll probably be the dreaded FWD but the point is i need something relaxing & reliable to go to W.Sx in to see Dad on any long weekends i have free so no time for OOF or classic meets. The whole family are far flung, Norfolk, Boston, Woucester, Manchester, Derbyshire & Peak district, Hove. He's either staying with one of us or we're staying with him. This is how it will be till he pops off so sorry for rambling but i need a nice mile muncher.

I'd appreciate any suggestions & good/bad points of said motors. Given i'm after a cruiser auto is ok. Guy.
