Diesel cars.
« on: 26 July 2011, 21:42:37 »

Which diesel car would you recommend for around the 2 or 3 grand mark? Later this year i'm giving my son Scott the MX5. I love it but getting in & out is'nt as easy as it was when i had my first one some 12/13 years ago so i'm going to enjoy it a while longer then grow up....a bit! I fancy a Passat, A4, Xtype Jag but will probably only get a high mile nail for the money so Focus, Pug 406/306 with low miles & history might be more realistic. Quite fancy a volvo but don't know much about them...Sorry but nothing from Vauxhall. I know it'll probably be the dreaded FWD but the point is i need something relaxing & reliable to go to W.Sx in to see Dad on any long weekends i have free so no time for OOF or classic meets. The whole family are far flung, Norfolk, Boston, Woucester, Manchester, Derbyshire & Peak district, Hove. He's either staying with one of us or we're staying with him. This is how it will be till he pops off so sorry for rambling but i need a nice mile muncher.

I'd appreciate any suggestions & good/bad points of said motors. Given i'm after a cruiser auto is ok. Guy.

Mrs Opti briefly owned an X-type Mondeo......a 3.0 SE Auto. Quite frankly it was awful Guy. It had every electrical fault under the sun. Not a proper Jag in my opinion. :-/

Why nothing from Vauxhall Guy? In the model/price bracket you describe, my first choice would be an Astra 1.7 cdti every time!  :y

yeh, the Astra 1.7 is a good little run about.

The Passat is as dull as ditch water and the A4 just as bad (but smaller and worse handling!) although the 1.9 diesel is a good lump. If going VAG I would be looking at Golf/Seat TBH.

I just don't love them. They're ok but leave me cold, no love or interest. Sorry! :y

although I'm no expert for diesels, if I had to buy a diesel, high mileage ones are a definite no no..repairs are costly even in small lumps .. and you pay more at the beginning..

golf diesels worth checking imo..

Golf/Seat Leon are possibilities. The 130bhp diesel Passats are nippy. Are'nt Seats high ins groups?

There are so many Mondeos around, the prices are low and you should be able to pick a 130bhp for not too much cash!  Boring as heck though!  Is there an exciting diesel?

the tdci mondeos are a bit iffy  a tddi on the other hand pulls like a train  from 1800 rpm when the turbo kicks in  mine has been tweaked a little though but still easily get 50 plus mpg on the motorway  or the st diesel definately far from boring :y

Have you thought about something completely different like a Ford SMAX:

http://www.honestjohn.co.uk/road-tests/ford/ford-s-max-2010-road-test/

or for ease of getting in or out and comfortable driving position a Ford CMAX:

http://www.honestjohn.co.uk/carbycar/ford/c-max-2003/

although avoid the CVT auto like the plague as the gearboxes give up at about 50,000 miles and are no longer made, so you have to scrap the car!!! :o :o :o

interesting no one mentioned the vectra c diesel, theyre pretty solid motors, seen a few with 200k+ and still driving strong, and you'll have alot of change left!  ;)
