At long last, MPG
« on: 06 August 2011, 15:31:19 »

Been to Southampton and back, albeit with a heavily laden car, and for the first time in the 12 months I've owned this 2.6, I've got more than 300 miles out of the tank!

Can't keep driving to Southampton every day just to get more than 300 miles out of a tank ;)

Worst car I've ever owned for petrol consumption, even the 3ltr Senator and the Carlton 3ltr 24v Gsi I used to own, did better than this one.

Went to Manchester and back Friday, round trip of 339 miles and averaged 31.9 mpg and only 3/4 of a tank. Not bad considering i was stuck on the M6 for 45 mins on the way there after an accident two junctions further up and a 45 min go stop crawl out of Manchester onto the M60 later that night. Hoofed it a bit on way back as well as the motorways were very quiet  :y

No trouble getting 300 from mine if driven normally...or sensibly I should say.

Please excuse my assumption but I would have thought a more, er, sensible driver would get 300 easy enough...  :-/

I presume The Groomer has had tech 2 on it and found nothing amiss....?

Yup, I am a 'smooth' driver, not ashamed of it, will get the lads to re-run a TechII at Newent.

Checking multi rams, cam timing and exhaust for blockages will help in the mean time... Should the opportunity arise... ?  :-/

Cam timing should be OK, cam belt changed at last Newent meet.

Will check the multi rams, they were working last time I checked about 3 months ago, exhaust....?????

Exhaust - yep. My back box blew with a BOOM about 2 weeks ago whilst towing and joining M4 from A34. 1st flat out, 2nd, then in 3rd it split the back box. All sorted now but along with more power/perfomance the mpg has gone up big time. Cruising at 65mph the instant consumption has gone up from about 28mpg to about 38mpg. Towing figures are up from 18mpg to 23mpg over a 250 mile trip. Must have been a big blockage in the back box. Hope it helps  :y
