An early 'Disco'....... 8-)

Cheap insurance/parts, not scared of dirt (inside or out) and really quite accomplished off-road. :y

There is only one brand.  Given its for onroad use, Disco isn't a bad choice.  If going for an early one, check for rust.

Service parts are dirt cheap, and easy to get hold of, and due to a loyal following, plenty of help on the internet :y

Land Rover Discovery everytime. Shame you want a manual as I will have an auto for sale in a couple of weeks. My Mrs has had another one. :y

Another vote for a RR/Disco, the latter being better in that price range :y

Any real reason why it must be manual? Just thinking you could open your options if you went Auto too :-/ :-/ Possibly LPG'd V8 for the same running costs if a filling station is nearby ;) ;)

Listed over your budget, but could haggle.
At that kind of money I'd be looking at a Jap import (Toyota, Isuzu, Mitsubishi, et al). They come in to the UK with bugger all mileage, and are invariably better specced than what we get here as standard.

I don't know if the Jap 4x4's are any more or less capable of the same job than a Disco, but Jap cars are on the whole incredibly reliable and fairly cheap motoring overall in my experience.

Mine wasn't too bad really rust wise, I know the sills, rear wheel arches & boot floor are where to look. Unfortunately the photos don't show any of those areas.
Mine was an absolute peach of a find 62k on a 1998 plate, paid £1100 for it with full dearler history. Only had it 8 months absolutely lovely car, same colour as the add too. Then some Twonk drove into the rear of it & said "I didn't see it!!!!" Insurance bloomin well wrote it off as beyond economical repair GRRRRR!!!!

oh yes :y
ive had a disco and i loved it,but it loved being fixed...always doing something to it,look at my avatar and that is proper 4x4 all round with reliability.when it comes to serious off roading then nowt touches landrover but if you want something that works offroad and reliable then i suggest trooper..mines the bighorn which means its better spec than uk models :y

No dealings with the big ones, but we (bro and I) got through 3 Troopers in a week about 5yrs ago. Admitted one was just the ventilation fan failing. ;D
