I was thinking the same thing, Mig was a mare last year, so if I keep it was looking at something like this...

http://www.nokiantyres.com/tyre?id=12091290&group=1.01&name=Nokian+Hakkapeliitta+7

Hmmmm, studded,is that legal in the uk :-?

Yes .. but VERY limited .... if you google you will find several entries along these lines ..

Quote
The use of studded tyres on normal roads not covered by snow and ice is likely to result in excessive road damage and create a danger due to their reduced performance on normal roads.

All road vehicles must conform to the Road Vehicles (Construction and Use) Regulations 1986 (C&U). Regulation 27 (1)(h) of the C&U states that tyres should not be used on the road if "the tyre is not maintained in such a condition so as to be fit for the use for which the vehicle is being put or might in any way cause damage to the surface of the road or damage persons on or in the vehicle or to other persons using the road."

So, legal on snow but probably illegal the moment you hit a clear patch as the studs could damage the road surface.....  :(

ok.. studded tires are required only in steep, long icy hills..people living in those areas have to use..

however m&s tires are adequate for 99 % of snowy icy, roads.. but , tire producers make 2 different kinds of those tires.. some have more grippy teeth with less speed capability and some are for less severe conditions with high speed ratings.... obviously high speed rating snow tires not useful..

also, m & s tires are never false economy as they are also very good for rainy, muddy, dirty roads as they grip much better..the only drawback is that as their teeths are soft , they cant resist high speeds for long..

Don't forget to tell your insurance company as they may class it as a modified vehicle!!!  :o :D

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-11969958

Looking around, I found most tyre suppliers don't list W/S or Winter tyre prices on their websites, the only one I have found so far, that actually categorizes by tyre type is this:

http://www.mytyres.co.uk/

If anybody else has found any other websites that actually list prices, please let me know as I interested as I expect to drive to the Ukraine to visit or hopefully to be living there this winter, where winter tyres are compulsory, if stopped by the police there you have to pay a bribe fine.  ::)
What part of Ukraine are you going to? I have been there a few times myself.

A small town called Tal'ne in the Cherkasy Oblast. It is about half way between Kiev and Odessa. If I'm using the motorway (E95) from Kiev to Odessa, I leave it at Uman and it is about 30 miles east from there.

My wife's family live in the village Sokolivochka just outside Tal'ne

buy from Ukraine if you go early.. will be cheaper ..

Your right, been looking on some Ukrainian tyre supplier websites and the typical saving is about £10 per corner compared to UK prices.  :y :y :y

We have been there in winter, -20C, my old 2.0 mig estate performed flawlessly. :)

We have also talked about living there, would be interested in how you get on. :y

life is cheaper in Ukraine compared to UK.. if you sacrifice some comfort, in some areas will be less than half cost..

big cities no different in comfort but they are not that cheap..after westerners start to visit frequently, the prices increased..

My summer tyres are on they're last legs.

Going by average temps in uk, November to march are below 10 degrees. So might consider winter tyres at the end of the month.

Or do I want a good rain tyre?

Let's face it. At it's worst the snow lasted a week at the most. It was around for longer but as far as traffic goes the roads where salted eventually.
My commute is urban for 5 mins, motorway for 10mins, urban for 5 mins if no traffic when on shift, so high speeds are likely. Given that no other bugger uses winter tyres, if it snows the motorway will be in passable from traffic, so the only use will be the urban bits of the journey, namely getting out of my road, 400 yards uphill, and pulling into the work estate which is ltd by speed humps and 20mph limit anyway.

A Land Rover is always an option  ;D

Currently thinking of getting a sierra XR 4x4 or cherokee on gas. Omegas are lethal in snow!

I had a 2.8 XR4X4 for many years, which was brilliant in the snow.

This last winter I tried winter tyres for the first time on the Omega, because as we all know Omega's are lethal in the slippery stuff. Winter tyres are definitely well worth the money. I bought a secondhand set of standard size wheels for £40 off Ebay to which I fitted 225 winter tyres. I was supprised at just how good they are.  :y :y

Amount of snow is inversely proportional to investment in winter tyres. ;D

The only time I had severe problems was when the show in our cul-de-sac was high enough to beech the Omega on its' floorpan, and I have some chains this year, so I won't be bothering.

Good point.. Chris, I think you should buy some very expensive winter tyres! Thanks ;)

I got around fine last year in the MR2 .. apart from the time I found 8" of fresh snow over my road (dead end, private road, there weren't even any tyre tracks) - apparently asking the car to go around a 90º bend, up a rise and use the front bumper as a snow plough was a step too far  ;D

(I took the chickens option after that - worked from home for a few days!)

In 2009 I was sliding all over the place at the first snow fall and did not use the Omega again when there was snow on the ground.

So for 2010, bought some 2nd hand standard 16" alloys, fitted 2nd  hand 225/55 winter tyres. Brilliant! Did not get stuck once. Never afraid to go out, even when there was 6+" of fresh snow around.

I would definitely recommend winter tyres if you want to have a car that acts as a car in the winter, not just a big white lump in the drive.

And as a bonus I got to spend some time with My Lovely Children, giving them lifts to work etc.  :)

One other distinct benefit was no more tramlining

Mine will be under a cover from November. I'm not risking it.
