Sunday driving quiz Mk2

Ok guys & gals. Only one rule: No breaking the rules.

WITHOUT cheating, answer the following 10 questions related to driving.

1.      You are at traffic lights and there are two lanes going straight ahead. You are in the left of those two lanes lanes. The other side of the lights there is only one lane. Who has priority? A: You B: The cars on your right

2.      You break down on the motorway and pull over to the hard shoulder. You have no mobile phone, so you decide to walk to the orange breakdown motorway phone. Which way should you walk? A. Towards on coming traffic. B Away from oncoming traffic C. Just to the nearest box in either direction.

3.      Torque steer is unique to front wheel drive cars. True/False

4.      You are advised to remove your seatbelt to reverse. True/False

5.      You are never allowed to drive down the opposite carriageway of a dual carriageway. True/False

6.      You are driving in a built up area with street lights. You are unfamiliar with the area and are unsure of the speed limit. There are no signs for over ½ mile. What is the speed limit?

7.      Are you ever allowed to drive through a RED traffic light? If so, when?

8.      You are driving (without speeding) along a country road at 3am. You hear a thud and stop. You are now aware that you have struck a pedestrian who was walking in the road. You check and see that he is badly injured and unconcious. You write your name and address on a piece of paper and leave it in his top pocket. You then get back in your car and drive home. What offence have you committed?

9.      What is the minimum overall stopping distance for a car in good condition on a dry road traveling at 60mph? A. 60ft, B. 120ft, C. 180ft, D, 240ft, E. 300ft, F. 360ft.

10.      Who, apart from police is authorized to stop traffic?

1, You
2, the nearest as shown by the markers.
3, true
4, false
5, false
6, 30mph
7, yes, when it's green
8, leaving the scene of an accident
9, E
10, School crossing patrol

Looks like I need to reread the highway code, some of those were pure guess.

1) A

2) A

3) True

4) False

5) True (unless in the event of roadworks that direct you to the other side ;D )

6) 30mph

7) No, unless the lights are not functioning correctly, then proceed with care

8) Leaving the scene of an accident. Potentially other crimes related to hurting the person.

9) D

10) Question not totally clear - a "lollipop lady/man" can stop traffic from moving to enable others to cross, but cannot stop and question a driver. So technically, a lollipop person can stop a car - and they must stop! Also, VOSA can pull cars over into spot checks etc. Otherwise, nobody but the police can pull you over.

1. I would say A, as its normal for offside cars to merge into the left lane, but if theres no right turn at the lights then the offside car would have priority, as you should be turning left. But depends if theres a bus lane the other side of the lights.....then nearside car should merge into offside lane.

2. Its rare that breakdown assist will take position of breakdown on the motorway over a mobile phone.....if you use a breakdown assist phone then they know your exact location.....but answer is nearest phone, C......indicated by an arrow on a marker post.

3. True

4. False

5 False i would say, if given direction to do so by Police

6 30mph

7 No, unless directed by Police

8 Hit and run

9 Not sure but i think C or D

10 Agree with James plus also Motorway patrol under authority of police

Some very interesting answers coming in now. Once again, I think some of you may be surprised by the answers which I will post later today.

Good answers, but also some bad guesses. One question is catching most of you already. You may surprised when I reveal which one that is and why!

1 A (the people in lane two are in the "overtaking lane".
2 C
3 False some badly engineered four wheel drive cars
4 False
5, false e.g. contraflow or if you are 80 and coming back from shopping trip
6 30
7 Yes- only when instructed to do so by a police officer (e.g. to clear an obstruction, fault on lights)
8 Depends who the person is. No only joking. Would guess "leaving the scene of an accident".
9. 180 ft
10. Anyone if the circumstances dictate e.g. there is a serious accident around the next blind corner.
