Two questions, actually several others, but two for now... :D

1. Did they paint it with the boot shut?

2. Is that corrosion along between the rear shelf brace and rear seat panel :-\

Being ali, I think they get the equivalent of booth sprayed rather than dunked like steel. So the hidden parts inside tend to be the primer colour. Maybe DTM knows more, but both mine are mostly that green/grey colour inside.

2) No, trick of the light couple with 1) above.
Fair does. Perhaps it's a generational approach... For all their obvious faults, MB actually paint the whole shell and lacquer the bits that might be visible.
Your era Merc will be steel shell and steel chassis, so needs painting fully to stop the corrosion.  So MB do it the same as any other mass produced steel car.
