Ebay - How many sales really complete?
« on: 18 July 2007, 17:42:28 »

I've got the impression that a huge proportion of Ebay 'sales' don't actually complete.

I've bought one car that I found on Ebay where the Ebay sale then fell through,  have recently viewed another, and am watching another that's now on its third visit to the bay.

My concern as a potential buyer is being bid up by people who have no intention of buying - I guess the trick as always is to know your limit - still v. annoying if you end up paying more as a result of some not serious prat bidding against you.

As a seller ... do Ebay still charge you the fee if the deal fails?

Having said that I have never really bought or sold a car through Ebay.    What is the consensus here?

Yup, win or lose, sell or not, they will take there fees, which are getting dam silly these days! ::)
Befor me wife fell ill she was a powerseller and only bought and sold cars, so I know a bit about this!
As far as cars go these days I would use the autotrader, £7.50 for 2 weeks, with no commision charges unlike ebay. Min you can get a car on ebay for is about £8.50.  Thing is with selling a car on ebay, everyone wants somthing for nothing. If your a buyer yup there are car bargins to be had, but as a seller dont be expecting a great price.

I been screwed by non payers and timewasters on ebay man times, but it always makes them think twice these days as I in big bold font I alwasys say at the bottom of any listing......

NON PAYERS AND TIMES WASTERS WILL BE PURSUED FOR ALL RELEVENT COSTS

Which has kept the idiots away lately. 8-)

In time the world will be run by uncle sam, ebay, and tesco! ;D ;D ;D

As a seller on Ebay for a good few years ive not had much trouble with idiots, you can claim fees back for non payers messing you about but it does take time.. Ive also sold a few cars without so much as a hitch...Guess its luck of the draw.. :y

i suppose it depends on the leniancy of the seller, or the circumstances of a fallen through sale

on ebay, as rules state, people bid to buy, and if i listed something on ebay i'd list it as full and as accurate as possible and if someone bids but then decides not to buy then i would report them to ebay, meaning i may be able to get seller success fees refunded, however there are a small number of people who bid with a genuine interest but unforseeable circumstances mean they cant complete the sale, but then it's up to you what you do about it if its your item that sold but didnt sell!

feedback is a very important thing, including the justifiable negatives innocent people get from idiots who leave negatives for petty reasons!

not sure if i mentioned this on a related thread but I once bought an o2 XDA off ebay for £120 off a guy who appeared to be genuine, I paid with paypal, only to get an e-mail from the seller telling me that the account my money had gone to wasnt his, and that his ebay account had been hacked, I immediately complained to ebay and to paypal, paypal froze the payment and attempted to contact the paypal-registered e-mail, with no luck, so the transaction was reversed, but also ebay refunded me the money I'd paid, minus £15 admin fees, not realising that paypal had managed to stop my money leaving my account in the first place, so I got my £120 back through paypal and an extra £105 from ebay :y I left £120 in my paypal account for a month to give them chance to rectify their mistake, but they didnt... quids in!!

I have a car ont here currently.....i treat ebay as an auction - and prices are similar to car auction halls....

Ebay charge for listing but dont take final valuation fees for non sales...

£7.50 for two weeks autotrader, isnt that in the sub £1000 catgory car though and online only?

Yup £7.50 for 2 weeks online, but your right as thats for cars under 1K. Although I see a lot of adds under 1K, but reading the add the seller ofter says the actual price, which maybe over 1K. Guess there just avoiding fees

that annoys me, cheapskates using the under £1000 section to get their car noticed...

"mercedes CLK £75.... beautiful car, blah blah blah, new tyre last week for £75, car price £32,000"

I Don`t believe the main problem being bidders that don`t intend to buy but more  those so called sellers. They log on with another name and bid for their own item, intending to bump up the selling price, and waiting then for some innocent buyer to then top his own bid.
I have been watching this sort of thing for quite a time now and have noticed that where these Auctions are taking place, a low appraisment e-Bay member will bid for a certain amount of time and then dissapear, only to reappear again on another Auction at a later date.
So be Aware 8-)

known as shill bidding, easy to spot when you view feedback and notice the same bidders bidding on all the sellers previous items!!

Never sold a car on ebay but I have vowed never to put one in auto trader again. The number of time wasters I had calling was incredible. Often the same tw@ calling every 'kin evening offering 1/2 the asking price, hoping I'd eventually cave in and the only way to get rid was to slam the phone down.

At least on ebay they don't phone you incessantly.

TBH, I can't stand selling cars and by the time I've finished with them they're worth damn all anyway so I tend to take the easy route trade in or sell to friends for beer money. Although that backfired when I sold my Rover 214 to my mate's brother only for the poor chap to have HGF and multiple clutch issues 2 weeks later ::). Then he wrote it off. Thankfully that wasn't my fault.
