Training new puppy
« on: 21 July 2007, 01:36:21 »

We have a 7 week old cocker spaniel puppy, called Megan. We are in the process of house-training her.

I wonder if anyone can see the obvious flaw with what Maria is doing?

1) The dog is being cage trained. This means that she is kept mostly in the cage, and let out to do her business at regular invervals. The idea is that the dog will not pee etc in the confined space, so will do it when she's let out.

2) We have got her some training pads. This is to encourage her to do her business in one location, rather than whereever she pleases.

3) Maria keeps putting the training pads IN the dogs cage because it's "convenient" to clean up, if there's an accident.

Sureley, this defeats the point of cage training the dog. The dog is in the cage in an attempt to discourage it from peeing - yet... sureley putting a "pee-pad" in the cage, is encouraging her to pee in the cage (which she shouldn't be encouraged to do - hence defys the whole point of cage training?)

Am I right or wrong?

This is obviously a trick question.
Maria is right. Women are always right .... even when like in this example, they are wrong!  ;D  ;D

You are right  .. its unfortunate that whilst training you HAVE to expect/accept that there will be failings and just clean them up. It is MOST important not to confuse the dog with mixed signals, do not encourage by pads or chastise for "accidents" but praise, praise, and praise again the successes when they occur.

It is perfectly possible to actually teach a dog to "go", both versions, on command .. all Guide dogs are so trained... just think what would happen if a Guide dog suddenly decided to "perform" wherever it felt like it !!

Toilet training to this level actually only takes about 6-8 weeks if done thoroughly, but all parties involved MUST use the same commands / timings / rewards ..

I am now jealous .. we had 2 cockers .. first for 14 years , then second for 12, will get another when I retire and we both no longer work, as I think it unfair to leave a pup unattended for so long.

Enjoy  :)

Do you know what the actual command for a guide dog to pap is? I could have some fun in the shopping mall with that.

Yep your right place the pad near the door to encourage your dog to go in one place then when you feel ready move the pad outside the door which hopefully will get it to paw the door when it wants to do its "stuff". As said it should take around six weeks to train successfully, and remember plenty of praise whan things go right :y I own a Weimeraner which is the same classification as a spanial HPR hunting dog, with a similar temperament, can be as "mad as a trout" :o

I must have been lucky with Holly....my black lab....tho she is pretty clever  :y

When she was a pup...i caught her once pooing in my house.....picked her up.....told her off and put her outside.....she never did that again.

It took two tellings off for weeing and she got put outside.....then she learnt  :y

Gratz on the pup  :) I have a 9 wk old Golden retriever and face the same issues of toilet training.

We have gone for the one spot method and as it is near the door will progress to moving it has been mentioned. The idea of the cage is sound but not if you are then going to convince the poor thing to use it as a toilet aswell then surely this will just negate any positive effect that you are trying for?

I agree with your logic completely   :y
