The miggy floats!
« on: 20 July 2007, 22:15:52 »

Bobbing up and down on the waves in a flood today.  :o :o

Still seems to run OK.  :-/

Hope the footwells are watertight!  Sure the cats weren't happy.  Surprised the HID's still work, wasn't willing to try them for about 10 minutes after dunking them.  :-[

I have NOT been through that much water in a 4x4!  Insane!!  Would not have done it if other cars weren't in front of me.  Crappy mobile phone pics don't do it justice.

Took me 7hrs to go 30 miles.  Once through last flood, was wide open.  Wasn't raining at all during those 7hrs?!  :-?

I was really worried, but EVERY road out of the area was flooded.  I couldn't turn off the road or back out once I started through the flood.  I had to drive 150+ meters through the river in the center of a little village.  Also, water levels were rising so if I stopped and abandoned the car it almost certainly would have been destroyed.  When the NSF wheel dipped into a pothole I thought it was game over.  :-/

I was being very careful, just idling the engine.  There should be a drain hole at the bottom of the airbox if you don't take in too much water.  I was also worried about the electricals, being able to start the car if it stalled with the tailpipe paritially submerged, and how hot the cats were before they got dunked (Couldn't have been happy!).

At least I could lounge with the windows and sunroof open and my sunglasses on.  :y ;D  Didn't hit the rain until I finally got onto the main roads.  They were completely clear and I blasted home at full speed.  HID's, cruise, everything seemed fine.  Well, the CD player did act up a bit so I will look at it today when I check for water ingress in the boot and footwells.  ::)

Cheers.  Yeah, catching up on more of those news stories today.  Certainly glad that I didn't try to swing out and go via the M5!  :o

I will say this though, I never saw any police or emergency services guiding traffic, or even any signs saying what to do.  Several villagers and other motorists were helpful.  I'm sure that the emergency services were very busy with more serious issues, but an ounce of prevention would have reduced the number of people stuck - if there were any open roads anywhere.  They may have just decided there wasn't anywhere better to send people, but even an announcement on the radio would have been helpful/comforting.  The radio was only getting info from listeners, and even their info on the road conditions was hours out of date - however it was still invaluable.

the air exhaust vents for the passenger compartment are behind the rear bumper, on the offside ... and the CD changer is literally right next to them - so I'd be looking there first ...

Cheers.  I noticed that when I went for a look yesterday.  However, if any water had gotten in there was no trace of it yesterday.

Haven't seen you in a while sounds2k!  I got a new motor for the HID, but then lost it, so no progress there.  :'(

The tractor's gearbox took exception presumably to the extra drag caused by the 'big puddle' (ie most of Witney!) that I drove through....  ....so not sure that counts as 'floats'!

Hi Theo,

have been mostly lurking of late!!! Have been to a few breakers recently but not seen any miggy's with HID ... will keep an eye out for you though.

I've been busy with what will probably end up as the miggy's replacement ...

... a Saab 9000 Aero auto ... quicker than the miggy yet on the run back from Plymouth collecting it, the Saab used £10 less petrol than the miggy ... and it's as comfortable ... FWD tho ... but good fun suprising people  ;)

I didn't have full weight on the wheels, and the wake of each passing lorry axle made the car bounce up and down!

I tiptoed very carefully.  A lot easier on the 'box than my usual driving.  ::)

Yeah, it doesn't handle as well but there was a time I'd be tempted by an Ur-S4/S6.  Faster in all conditions and at least as good on fuel.  More expensive to keep running I expect though.

I am amazed at how much you can get away with in the miggy despite being RWD, as long as you're driving style is very deliberate.

oooh an Aero!  :) ... shame it's an auto though.
Wonderful seats, damn quick (against an Omega it is a of a mismatch), and does handle very well. just watch the autobox, 24k fluid changes are essential.
