Yippee! I'm back on the road!
« on: 11 August 2007, 18:06:14 »

Well, Kevin Wood came round at around 11.00 am and we started to get to work on the cambelt. Finally got car fired up around 3.30 this afternoon.

We decided not to do a HOW TO, because we still don't really know. It was clear that we needed an extra tooth of slack on the right hand side to get the lower non-adjustable pulley on, but every time we cranked the engine round that extra tooth appeared somewhere else. First off all pulleys were fine, but the crank was a tooth out and the next time the crank was fine, but all the pulleys were a tooth out. Basically we played around with until finally everything lined up. It was an absolute nightmare of a job.

Huge thanks to Kevin. Absolutely top guy  :y :y :y :y with a super car (he came in his Westfield today!).

Thanks to everyone else on the forum that helped, especially Ronnie. :y

It was a pig of a job. The worst job I have ever undertaken on an Omega. Still, all done now and, as Ronnie pointed out, I have saved an awfully large amount of cash by not taking the car to a dealer.

Been drowning my sorrows this week ( [smiley=beer.gif] [smiley=beer.gif] [smiley=beer.gif] ).

Nick

Tonight I need to celebrate ( [smiley=beer.gif] [smiley=beer.gif] [smiley=beer.gif] !!!)

Well done Nick and especialy Kevin for going to bale Nick out. I was glad to offer help and would have gone down except I couldn't today.

This guys and gals is exactly what the forum is all about. We help each other. That was we all learn a bit, meet some great people and best of all keep our cars running sweet without the bitter taste of a VX dealer bill!

So, congrats Nick and Kevin. Job well done!!!!! :y

No problem. It was a pleasure to help out.

Wondered what happened on the way home (and also why my exhaust sounded like a rifle going off every time I came off the gas on the M25, but that's another story...). Still not entirely sure what was going on. The first time we fitted the belt we ended up with cam 4 one tooth out again. It had moved relative to the mark on the belt so in hindsight I think this must have slipped while fighting with the lower tensioner pulley. We bought ourselves enough slack to shift this pulley round a tooth and, after turning the crank 2 times the whole lot were a tooth out  >:(.

Decided that starting again would put us in the same boat so again we bought ourselves some slack around the crank pulley. With the cams locked at the tdc position we nudged the crank round another tooth and tensioned the belt. After this it was finally correctly timed.

It appears to be very easy to get a 1 tooth error on either the crank pulley or cam 4 when turning the crank back to 10 degrees BTDC to fit the lower tensioner, and I think this is the main cause of the problems. That and the fact that missing marks on the belt means you're messing about with tip-ex marks painted on the belt ::) So much for dropping the lower adjustable pulley "simplifying the procedure". Yes, it's one thing you don't have to adjust but getting that pulley on with everything still timed up is a real swine.

Anyway, I hope the car drives OK Nick? It certainly is a lovely Omega you've got there!

Cheers,

Kevin

Seems to drive sweetly, Kevin.

Once again, thanks very much. Hope you enjoyed the cool beer, the ham sandwich and the cuppas.  :y :y :)

Hope you get your firmware sorted out on the Westfield (Mind you, those bangs on the overrun are very reminiscent of the Porsche 917s back in the days when I paid a visit to Le Mans...aaahh, memories.).  ;)

Glad to hear all is well now. Food for thought but if you had forked out and taken it to a garage they would have probably settled at 1 tooth out. So you have done together afar better job and all it cost was lunch :y
