Perseid Meteor shower tonight
« on: 12 August 2007, 13:30:31 »

For anyone interested in meteors, tonight is a good time to watch them.

find somewhere without a lot of light pollution, open a bottle, lay back and enjoy the free spectacle. Last night was pretty good here. We found the most were from the North East (look for the W of stars in the sky!)

Yep, should be good. I remember seeing a fireball during a (November) Leonid shower a few years ago. No one else around to share it with at the time, but the colours and vapour trail it left were astonishing. I'd love to see a bolide, which is a special type of fireball which explodes in a bright terminal flash at its end, often with visible fragmentation. Could be some fireballs tonight. You don't have to wait up to the early hours. Basically any time after 10pm local and you should see one or two meteors every five minutes (due to increase to one or two every minute just before dawn).

Good website: http://spaceweather.com/

Happy viewing!

Well, I was sat outside the caravan awning last night, wrapped up in a sleeping bag with me tinny and saw loads of meteors, up to three per minute with some doubles. Stayed up till about 0100 but couldn't keep my eyes open any longer.  :(

Still good display. We also saw a pod of dolphins in St Ives Bay today. There must have been up to a dozen of them and they stayed around for at least a couple of hours. I feel quite at one with nature at the moment.  :) :)
