helicoil info
« on: 19 August 2007, 15:18:59 »

Hi Guys

I'm really stuck. I can't get another sump, I'm all out of options, so think I'll need to helicoil my existing one. I know nothing at all about what this involves, or how to do this. Please could someone offer some information, or a mini how2 for someone starting from scratch? To include what parts I would need?

Cheers muchly
James

I just came across a How2 on another forum, actually. Extremely useful, I think I could have a crack at heli coiling it now. I will remove the sump as it's my first time, and to aviod getting bits in it. assuming it's not an engine out job, etc, on the small block engine?

My biggest concern now, is knowing what drill bits/tap/helicoil sizes to use  :-/

And also, where to get a helicoil kit etc from, tomorrow.

I could talk nicely to a local engineering shop once sump is off, but that way I won't learn anything...

comparing the bolt against a tap, it looks to be at least m14..

IMO, weld it back on and keep an eye out for another on your next oil change :)

Not much point in that, if I Can do a permanent repair and only have to take the sump off once...

Having said that - if it gets desperate....  ::)

It will never be strong and reliable re-tapping it though IMO, your best off welding it up and getting one from a breakers/scrapper.  :y
