Newbie with a question.....
« on: 16 September 2008, 17:10:44 »

Just a quick hello from me having bought a very troublesome S reg (old model) 1999 Omega 3.0l Elite auto saloon a few months back.

So far it has cost me the earth but it does have FMDSH and sports only 52K miles.  I won't list all the faults - not yet anyway but most have been sorted including the heater matrix.  Literally, everything went at once!

Just a quick question.  The engine seems to run rather warm which I am told is typical for this type of car.  The fan is often activated, even after standing still for a few minutes but again I am told this is normal including the fact that the temp gauge quickly shift to 100 degrees before falling back again.  I will await your expert replies.

As soon as I know what I am doing on this Forum I will download some photos.

Thanks in advance!

Greg

"Hello" and welcome :)

Couple of things to try and help you ...

Stick your car details and location in your profle .. save you being asked a zillion times !!

Tech help questions are best asked in "General Help" .. more of the forum experts visit there than here.

Overheating of oldish miggys can be loads of things .. from silted up rads to simple things like the header tank cap leaking air (it has a built in valve). many problems are caused by past poor maintenance .. the coolant system MUST have a 50:50 mixture of water:Vx red antifreeze at all times ... not just for the antifreeze ability .. but as an anti-corrosion additive.

I would start by doing a full system flush 5 - 6 times - drain/refill with just water, run for a day with heater on lots, repeat, until only clear water comes out after the run, then refill with 50:50 mix (easy way is to put 5 litres a Vx red in and top up with water !! system holds about 9.5 ltrs water) and see what happens.

The reasson  for doing so many, and having the heater on, is you can only drain about 1/2 the system using the rad drain, and there is no engine drain ....

Thanks Guys.  Profile has been updated.  The main Vauxhall dealer have told me that the system has been flushed several times already and that these types of cars always run warm?.  I will take this through to the technical side to see if this really is the case.  The dealership (not local) have not been entirely honest or maybe I should say competent.
