Sub24 is here
« on: 22 September 2008, 21:54:09 »

Just signed up to this forum today as i thought it might be a good way to save re-inventing the wheel.

Ive got a 2001 2.6 CDX Auto that i bought direct from Vauxhall. It was 9 months old and had 7,000 mile son the clock.

Now it just turned 141,000  - Still going storng but starting to suffer a few problems.

The headlight level sensors have stopped working and it also looks like it suffering front the rocker gaskets / breather issue.

Up until recently it has always ben serviced by a main dealer and its had the CAM belt and tensioner changed 3 times now. But to try to sae money ive decided to do most things where possible myself.
Im a reasonable spanner head and have most of the basic tools.

A few questions below would be nice to hear all you opinions on.
1. How many miles are these engines/gearboxes good for.
2. How does the Tech 2 software work and how do you connect it up.

Welcome :)

If properly maintained, the V6 goes on easily beyond 200k.  Autoboxes need ATF changes to help them last.

Tech2 - the real one - plugs in diag port under steering wheel and talks to all onboard computers, eg engine, gearbox, abs, heigh control, power steering, cruise, immobiliser, ecc, alarm, headlights, sunroof, radio, MID, instrument panel, etc

Ive got a copy of the Tech CD i bought on ebay.

Does this have the correct software on it. Its meant to be the genuine Vauxhall one.

Also what sort of cable do i need between laptop and car plug.

Do you have the £3000 Tech2 scanner? If not, you cannot use TIS to talk to car.

As an aside, if it came from ebay, I would put my left bollock on it being an illegal copy (likely to be on CDRs, or if pressed disks, no licence provided), and sadly to protect the forum, do not allow discussion of copying/installing/distributing/using illegally copied material.

But assuming I'm wrong, and it is licenced, TIS is designed to work with Tech1 (for pre 1997 cars) and Tech2 (for post 1997 cars), and will not talk to other scanners (ignoring Tech3 and Tech30 for a mo).

Other scanners come with their own software, seperate from TIS.

Also be aware that the hundreds of £20 'Tech2' auctions on egay are not for the proper Tech2 device, they are for what we tend to refer as the cheapo tech2.
