Help with astra MK4

My mrs's car is an Astra G 1700 DTI got a question to see if anyone knows about the aircon on that model recently turned the aircon on, it came out warm so i got a re-gas kit from halfords and tried to re-gas it and it didn't work, i've noticed that before when i turned the aircon on you could here it kicking in but now still warm and cannot here it kicking in but the light is coming on, on the switch anyone got any idea's ???

There will probably be an internal air temp sensor somewhere on the dash, similar to the Omega which is a little fan drawing in cabin air over a sensor to read the temperature.  If you look ont eh Omega, its in the centre of the dash (prefacelift with climate) and, if you hold a tissue over it when the aircon is on, it should suck the tissue inwards, if you follow.

Guessing the Astra will have something similar.  If no suction, its a starting point.  Sometimes the sensor contacts the side of the plastic whic gives a false reading.  be carefull of what you prod in there, though.  Easily broken.

As for a regas, go to quickfit.  If they can't fix it, you dont pay and it may point to where the fault lies, if its in the actual system?

Get some one to turn the aircon on and off  whilst there doing that have a look at the aircon compressor the center of the pully should start and stop as they press the button. If the center of the pully does spin its either low gas or the compressor is faulty if it doesnt it could be very low gas pressure(but as you've put some in its probaly not)or the magnectic clutch or power to it. There is normaly a single wire to the compressor disconect it and check the voltage if it changes between  0v and 12v as the switch is pressed the clutch has probably gone if it doesn't check the fuses and wiring..

Don't bother with crappy refil kits and pressure gauges - take it somewhere who can vac it, pressure test it, and refill it.

I don't know ... I've never really looked at SWMBO's car, but as it isn't climate control and has the ordinary red/blue dial, will it have an internal fan to monitor the temp? Surely you are the temperature sensor and alter as appropiate.

PS a can of R134a, as you can buy from Halfords worked wonders for my Omega as a stop gap measure.

My wife has the same system. As far as I know it doesn't monitor the temperature, it just blows the same temperature until you get too cold and turn the heat up a little. Climate control monitors the temperature and that is the difference between that and aircon.

With aircon switched off and temperature set to cold, presumably it is cold? Then when aircon is switched on at the same position it goes hot or simply doesn't cool? Not sure on the fix but that is most bizarre? I'd be tempted to take it to kwik-fit, they've got some pretty reasonable rates these days and have been investing in some new kit in our local branch.

Still a decent car so it's probably easier just handing over some wonga and have it looked at by a machine.

Yeah i got my son to do that and it seemed ok didn't check he voltage though may have a look at that any other thoughts guys??

A friend at work has same car but an estate not that it matters  :-?
anyway traced his, after regas didn't work, to engine fan module not starting fan. replaced that, all okay. If ecu doesn't get right signal back from fan wont engage A/C apparently? but it worked for him :)

Astra-G has a 'cooling module' ecu, which is tech2'able....

Totally agree  :y
The pressure needs setting up both sides of the compressor.......something i carnt see how you can do with these refil kits....plus just the right amount of gas....difficult with a refil kit.
Plus it doesnt get vac'd out or tested for leaks as TB says.
