Hi all, been a while since I was last on here, I have been on a road trip up north to see my parents in wakefield, car was perfect until the trip home

I had an average mpg of 36.3 over 561 miles of mostly motorway driving at 70 (ish) no engine problems which to be honest I was expecting.
Anyway, the trip home the other night turned out to be a real 'life flashing in front of the eyes' experience, I was happily cruising along at 50 through the roadworks on the M1 when the car suddenly seemed to cough and lose power but recovered after a couple of seconds of panic, all was well until re-joining the 70 section again, and upon flooring the accelerator the engine 'chugged' really hard and the loudest bang you can ever imagine possible under the car, before I realised what happened the car had spun 2 360's and landed in the verge of the hard shoulder, me the mrs and kids were all fine given the panic and shock, all the following cars seemed to be swerving around something in the road so I checked the tyre thinking I'd suffered a rear blow out and lost the tyre, it was still there but flat and ripped to shreds, the mrs called the police who turned up amazingly after about 5 mins and recovered the obstruction in the road - my back box!!!! it had exploded on the bottom part and fired a piece of metal into the tyre causing the spin, luckily the only injury was the car, the defect was still blocking the backbox which when the cop shined his light in there looked like an animal that had crawled up the pipes and got stuck and inevitably died and the exhaust pressure pushed it and blocked the pipes exit causing the whole lot, the AA came picked up the stricken car and took us all home before leaving my car in a garage around the corner fromn where I live, phoned up my insurance and amazingly they seem to think the damage is covered but they need to asses the damage before releasing any payment to the garage, hopefully be back on the road soon, but i'll always check my backbox from now on
