Cheap Colour printer help
« on: 05 September 2007, 21:58:18 »

Anybody give me a advice on a cheap but good colour printer with cheap refills..

My daughter needs a new one for school work..She must have had a party on top of the old one and mine is clogged up through lack of use..

Dont want to pay much for one as it will only be used for school work so what advice have you got for me..

If its just insults i can start a new thread for that.. ;D

generally, cheap printers = expensive ink.

Consider Epson R200/R220 for around £60, then look at cheap aftermarket inks...

I tend to look for a printer with seperate colour cartridges rather than the all in one colour cart.
Makes refilling easier I find.

I have had a few Epson printers which take the cheap inks but i find they clog up when not used for a short time thats why i asked what others use and if they have the same problem..

I have a a laser but she needs colour..

Agreed, that Epson fits that criteria, and it prints on CDs....

It supposed to be more economic, and it makes sense because you only replace the ink that is actually finished etc, but after running a 4-cartridge printer for a couple of years I gave up and went back to 2-cartridge (one tri-colour and one black). this is because the separate colours never go at the same time and it is a logistic nightmare to make sure you always have a spare cartridge with the right colours.

But perhaps not everyone keeps spare cartridges at home.. have we discussed what i carry in the boot...?  ;D

Agree with all points made on the Epson. Cheap ink avaiable on the web in all colours so not a problem to have enough ink but mine suffers badly from drying out when not used for any length of time. I wonder what genuine Epson ink would be like?

Lexmark are very good and reasonably priced printers.. I know a lot of folks say the cartridges are expensive ( and they are) but they do last a long time due to their size. It is also easy to pick them up 1/2 price on fleabay - and that's for lexmark not after market. I never use cheap refills as experience shows they either block easily or the colour is "thin"

This one looks reasonable

 or even cheaper

the older beige stylus ones were awful for that, but I understand the newer grey ones are much better

I have both but they suffer the same..

The problem is with kids they use ink like tap water, when it comes time for school work no ink left and buying the proper cartridges can get expensive then..A print factory will use less ink than my daughter.. :o

Epson printers run a nozzle clean routine when switched off or switched on. For this reason it is not a good idea to leave it switched on indefinitely, or switched off when not in use for a long time (all this relates to after the cartridges have been inserted for the first time). It also not a good idea to connect it to a power strip and switch it off from a central switch rather than from the on-off button. To make sure the ink does not dry (and block the nozzles) you should switch it on when using it and then switch of off at the end of the day. This does waste ink but saves the printer. Also, if you have a warranty claim, do not mention that you leave it on or off for a long time, because Epson are notoriously difficult with warranty repairs... on the other hand the whole things costs just £60 so if it dies after a year or so, you get a new one....

these days its often cheaper to replace the printer than refill the ink!!

I have a lexmark 4300 3-in-1, printer copier scanner, and it cost me £60
