Check the header tank... is there exhaust fumes in there or brown sludge?

Ive been a cheeky barsteward and asked him if the car is for sale, so I now have a 1998 2.5 elite with leather sat on the drive, it needs an oil cooler but at least the cam belt and tensioners were done 7000 miles ago using genuine parts :y

Im not so sure about the oil cooler. I asked the owner what was wrong and he said headgasket because theres oil in the header tank, but I couldn't see any and after driving it home last night (26 miles) theres no over heating and no oil in the water still :-/
