oil leak
« on: 12 October 2006, 21:41:43 »

Good news ; car passed it's MOT today  :)

Bad news ;  it has an oil leak from the rear crankshaft seal   :(

Is this a job for a relative novice to undertake, or do i need to seek " professional help " ? Your views would be much appreciated   :)

First off I would check the engine breathers and give them a really good clean, if they are blocked then crankcase pressure builds up and looks for somewhere to escape, the weak spot is usually the camcover gaskets but it can cause oil to be forced passed the crankshaft seals.
If you are lucky then sorting out the breathers will fix the problem, otherwise its gearbox out and flywheel off to change the seal.
If you decide to change the seal then I can give you some tips but sort the breathers first.
