Yet another aircon question!
« on: 11 October 2006, 17:13:18 »

Hi all,
when the "mechanic" (cowboy) removed the engine from my GLS prior to me buying it, he had to disconnect the aircon pump and remove the cooling rad etc. He didn't tape up the pipe ends as I've seen mentioned on here and the system has probably been open to the elements for 6 months at least. I've reconnected everything and would like to get the aircon working again, will the long period of disconnection have done any damage? I'd rather check or change things before  I take it to be regassed as it would be a waste of money otherwise. What should I  or can I check before regassing?

Cheers Jim

The key thing is that the dryer will have been exposed to moisture and hence will not function as well as it should.

The basics of a total re-gas require a large vaccum to be pulled on the system for a period of time which results in water boiling at ambient temperature and most of the systems moisture will be removed but, not that of the dryer (it has desicant in it).

So you might want to consider fitting a new dryer.... although many dont bother.

You also need to hope that nothing else was faulty on the aircon system.

Generally, you will not be able to test the compressor until the system is "gassed up".  I would strongly recommend that a new receiver / dryer is installed and that the "o" rings on the pipes connecting the system to the compressor (pump) are replaced.

There may be companies that can test the compressor out of the system - take a look at the yellow pages or yell.com.

As an aside, can you tell us anything about your Singer Chamoius?  I am somewhat of a Rootes fan these were only available for a short while and there cannot be many left now.  Better answer this in general chat and not here though! ;D
