Well I've finally done it. Following my injection of enthusiasm last weekend at Newent, I took the plunge and cleaned the throttle body and breathers as per the excellent guide in the maintenance section. I broke the clip on the DBW plug

but I don't think it will make any difference. There was a lot of crud inside the throttle body but it came up lovely with a bit of scrubbing and some poking with a cotton bud soaked in carb cleaner.
The difference was remarkable when I put it all back together. There was an initial cough and splutter when I fired up the engine but that soon settled down to a contented purr. When the engine got up to temperature the computer told me I was using 0.2 gals/hr instead of the usual 0.3 gal/hr and I'm sure the engine is more responsive and runs a little smoother.
So, huge thanks to Barry aka AutoAddict for the guide and giving me the confidence to do this job myself. I feel on top of the world as it all went back together and started first time. Now to treat the car to a nice bubble bath and some polish.

Edit: By the way, Carb cleaner stings when it splashes in your eyes
