I personally use Vx's own semi synth and their own filters.

On TC, both dirt cheap, but even retail, the filters are cheaper than Halfords etc...

161,000 and mine thrives on the stuff, I always change it every 5000 miles, it is more important to keep the oil doing it's job with a high miles engine.

As has been mentioned above, regular oil changes are the best thing you can do to the engine. Not only does it protect, but it also helps keep the breather system clearer.

I do mine every 3 - 4k.

What about an engine flush every now and again.

I've heard a mixed bag of good results and horror stories too.

Worth doing at 40k ?

Very regular oil changing is probably better than flushing. If you think it possibly needs a flush, just do some 1k oil changes....

Yep, I second this.  I took over the maintenance of a minibus that was never serviced for about 6 years.  The old oil was like treacle.  Rather than flush, I simply did as TheBoy says and did several short oil changes.  Each time, I used the cheap £5 a gallon oil (on the basis that it was not going to be in the engine long) and a new filter.

When the oil changes were done, filled with Castrol and now when the oil changes are carried out at regular intervals, it comes out nice a clean.

Personally, I would never use any sort of flushing oil.

Yeah, the current offer is due to end on 31st Dec. They may carry it on though, as they did last year...

Thanks I'll go for the short & frequent - especially as I only do 6 miles a day now.

Trade card's on its way so Vx oil for me.

I know I should take the bus but the schoolkids are a nightmare.
