Timbuk's DIS or not?
« on: 24 November 2006, 22:17:47 »

OK, so Timbuk's miggy is running somewhat rough.  Terrible mpg, hissing in plenum, hair out the tailpipe, EML, and seems to be running on about 4 cylinders.  Idle is smooth, runs evenly enough considering all this.  He will do the paperclip in the morning, but would like any comments from here as well.  (Other than checking the fuses!)

Ignition problems:
DIS (as suggested) will explain why two cylinders are out under load
HT leads, spark plugs...

Air/Fuelling:
Blocked air or fuel filter, faulty fuel pump, faulty/dirty injectors...

Engine management:
Any of a number of sensors failing confusing the ECU...

Exhaust:
The exhaust collapse may be un-related, but it could also be that the exhaust is partially blocked

Timing...?

Did I miss anything....?

Or it could just be that when the exhaust is unblocked/changed, the rest will disappear

2 cylinders out = DIS

1 cylinder out would be lead, plug or injector

2 cylinders out is painfully slow

Oh dear, sounds like a poorly Omega. :(

2 cylinders out is the DIS pack most likely.

Hairy exhaust means a visit to Vx for a shiny new back box, and I suspect a pair of centre sections.

This is not going to be cheap...

My line of thinking was that if the exhaust were blocked the back pressure could cause big problems, esp as idle is smooth.

Timbuk will check the error codes in the morning.  He is convinced it is 2 cylinders down, not one.  The DIS is Horizontal with a square plug.  Remeber the coolant hose from the oil cooler just went last week and soaked the DIS.

He has new center sections, will get cheap rear box if req'd.  Pre-facelift 2.5 Estate.

Didn't know that

coolant hoses and hbv failure often causes dispack issues if theres a soaking
