Squeak Squeak
« on: 26 November 2006, 10:20:23 »

It's all I hear now from my steering wheel at low speed.  Sounds like a rubber bush but what do I know.   :-X

It started last year and Vx changed the steering column under warranty 1m before it expired.  I ran it for a few weeks and it was worse so I asked them to fix it again as they hadn't fixed the original problem.  Got a call advising that they would, but I had to pay 10% - seemed reasonable until they told me this was £50  >:(.  Anyway long story short - they fitted a second column for free and it's been fine until yesterday when the mouse it back.

Any ideas?

Can you feel any vibration through the floor when turning the wheel with the car stationary ?

James - No vibrations & sound seems to come from under steering wheel.

Gwilym - I've got a cat but he's not allowed in the car - too hairy!

It's a very common fault. There's a Technical Bulletin on how to fix it.

It happens in the cold. And is caused by a clamp being too tight. The fix is to loosen it.....

It's a bit fiddly because one screw can't be reused.

Where might I find the Technical Bulletin & is it worth bothering with?

Don't know if you got it fixed or not, if not, I think what you're problem is, is the air-bag clock spring situated behind the steering wheel, unfortunately a common problem on a lot of cars these days and the squeaks from these tend to get worse in the cooler months.

Your car doesn't look hairy in the pics  ;D

Perhaps you are referring to your driving

Mine has this....well i wouldnt call it a squeak...more an shushing noise when turning the wheel when going slowly or stopped.....also get a clicking noise when turning the wheel with indicator on....it clicks all the time and very quickly....not sure but might have started when i fitted a 2nd indicator  stalk with cruise.....so was guessing it was probably this  :-/
