Mass air flow sensor
« on: 24 November 2006, 10:33:55 »

Have trawled through the forum but can't find answer to this one - maybe i've missed it!
The 'spanner' light started showing and I had a computer diagnosis - told it was air flow sensor - £145+VAT! Have found a new sensor on ebay for £43 but wondered whether fitting is a DIY job? It appears to be 2 circlips plus a plug for the elctronics. Any advice please? KenJ

Yeah I gotta say, I think it really is that simple... I think it's only matched to the Engine Type... eg 3.0ltr, 2.5 ltr, 2.0ltr etc, not the specific ECU.
Well, at least mine got wet + I also dropped it to, and I don't think that helped it demise. I replaced with a second hand one from another 3.0ltr, all I did was swap it over and plug it in... worked a treat...  :)

Cheers.

What engine and symptoms?

Plus you are absolutely 100% sure there are no air leaks?

I got that fault code when the breathers were blocked up the first time. Cleaned them out and fault code went on its own.

Thanks very much everyone. A great and prompt response.  I did forget to mention that it's a 2003 2.2. There are no actual symptons as far as the running is concerned - only the light coming on intermittently>The garage's computer indicated airflow sensor and they said that it was a common problem on Omegas - then quoted the price! Although I am loath to pay out £145+VAT, I thought that £43 plus a little DIY might be worth it. Thanks again. Ken J

Its such a common fault on Omegas that I have never seen one fail other than through physical damage.

Its VERY commonly wrongly diagnosed when there is an airleak.....because the ECU thinks the MAF is reading low due to unmetered air getting in.......if the dealer had been compitent they would have looked at the live data and operated varoious actuators like EGR....to see the reaction.

I would

a) Check the air inlet trunking for splits/damage.
b) Check the breathers etc are all clear and secure with no splits.

But, do consider the following:

If you just change the MAF and the problem isn't fixed (likely given the lack of proper analysis by the dealer) then you are then left pondering if

1) The ebay sourced item is good or also faulty
2) If there is another problem.

And then it becomes a messy willy nilly part changing process which is expensive.

Make sure you rule out the obvious before changing anything.

Excellent advice. I will certainly make the checks you suggest before proceeding. Many thanks. KenJ

It does sound as if air leak could be problem, rather than MAF.  MAFs are quite reliable (unless some plonker has stuck his fingers down it).  Failing Lamdas can also flag up MAF...

Had to replace my MAF sensor couple of years back, took the meega to vauxhall when it was playing
up had a diagnostic, told it was the MAF, did not know it was easy to replace so left it with them, they
fixed it then handed me a bill for over £300, i wish i had this site then. :(

It is very common for garages to say that the problem with the car is very common... for some reason it seems to put owner's mind at ease. When a garage next says this to you, ask them if they have the part in stock - if it is a common problem inded then they would have loads, but if they have to order it than you know it's all BS....
