Should my fan be doing this ?
« on: 05 December 2006, 00:52:48 »

Just bought my Omega 2.2 CDX auto (2003). No owners manual (dealer is sorting this out) hence this question.

The temperature controls/fan/aircon all seem to work in a fairly logical manner until I get to below 20 c. When I start to drop below this temperatue, the fan goes up a speed level for each degree lowered and cannot then be altered until it reaches 'Lo' and then I can adjust the speed of the fan again. It make no difference if the aircon is off or on (econ) or if recirculating.

To illustrate :

temperature set to 20c (and above) - fan speed set to lowest setting (indicated as lowwest setting on display) - nice and quiet - fan speed can be altered at will
temperature set to 19c - fan goes up one noise level (still indicating lowest on display) - slightly obtrusive noise - fan speed cannot be altered
temperature set to 18c - fan goes up another noise level (still indicating lowest on display) - obtrusive noise - fan speed cannot be altered
temperature set to 17c - fan goes up another noise level (still indicating lowest on display) - very obtrusive noise - fan speed cannot be altered
temperature set to 16c - fan stays at high noise level (still indicating lowest on display) - very obtrusive noise - fan speed cannot be altered
temperature set to 'Lo' - fan stays at high noice level (indicates full on display) - very obtrusive noise - fan speed can be altered

Is this supposed to happen ? I can't use it below 19c because it make too much noise. That's probably alright in winter, but in my previous car, I use the 16-19 range quite heavily when the weather is warmer/milder ?

Anybody have any ideas ?

I didn't check this as scientifically as you did, but yes the climate control seem to have a mind of it's own. I just set it manually to the temp and fan speed I want it. Now I'm sure that this is not random behaviour, and there is some logic to it all, but in my opinion the climate has too many sensors and too many computers and I can't quite figure it out... So I live with it. But watch this space, others may have a deeper insight into this.

Also, 2002 Owners manual is available in PDF, used to be downloadable from Vauxhall's web site but I think it's no longer there - if you can't find it then PM me an email address and I'll send it to you.

Doesn't sound right, I can have any fan speed at any temperature......

Think you'll find that normal on facelifts......except you should be able to alter the fan speed when temp set ie not on low.....however it will only remain at the setting you choose for a few mins before it reverts back to its own setting, Having it set on low is the only way to control the fan speed all the time.

Thats how it works on my 2.2 facelift.....however one tip ive found out....cover up the sunshine sensor....any hint of the sun when you have it set to a lowish temp will make the fans speed up otherwise.

Another tip.....in the winter months... if you've been out driving and engine is hot...if you need to get out to goto the shops for example or just park up, after switching off press auto and set the temp ( i have mine set to 22C) For the next 20mins (roughly) it will try to maintain 22C inside the car while your away.....so when you come back the inside will be nice and warm still  :y

tommoynihan think that sounds normal to me. 16-17 is pretty cold - i find 18 is about the lowest i want. the climate has to work to get the temp down and you prob find the fans slow down after a minute or two once its got to the right temp.

oh and i think the display only shows the fan speed in bars for a few seconds - its not actually changing after that but you should be left with a 'big fan' or a 'little fan' symbol which shows if youve set it above or below the automatic speed/

and iirc you can have any fan speed on 'lo' or 'hi' because its not trying to get to a set temp - its just blowing no heat or full heat regardless.

that said, sometimes mine goes into recirculate - try hitting the A button twice

But make sure you've got a decent battery, or you won't be able to start the car......

Sorry I sold my 2.2 DTI so I have no manual, your problem is the system needs to be reset, it may be the battery went flat or low and had to be charged, on preface lift models you hold the Auto and Off buttons on the control panel for more than 5 seconds, (you can hear all the servo's clicking in and out).
Once the system is reset most problems disapear.
Best of luck.

My Vx dealer says they can't reset it and it needs to have the control mechanism replaced.

It is under Network-Q Warranty, so it will be replaced for free, but I'm wondering if it really needs it.

i'll double check mine, but i can manually alter the fan speed on any temp setting.

During the hot weather it was set to 19 a lot, and was way to noisey, so i often just pressed the small fan button twice to put it on its lowest speed once the cabin was cool.

Was a good move, cabin became silent and you could not hear air blasting out, just a nice icey cold brease... although i only did this once the cabin was cold.
