We have traction
« on: 19 December 2006, 08:03:31 »

Right, about a month ago I bought Steve_W's 3L MV6 Estate  :)

http://www.omegaowners.com/forum/YaBB.pl?num=1163956996

Had a few niggles, nothing he wasn't up front about before hand, the main 2 being no traction control since he replaced the ABS ECU (and wrote the how2), but knew it just needed enabling by tech2

http://www.omegaowners.com/forum/YaBB.pl?num=1152729807

The other being that it will stall when started from cold, unless you manually keep the revs on for 30 secs or so, no big deal.  Was about to clean breathers and ICV to try and solve this.

Stopped of at Road Runners in Saltney on my way home yesterday - they have a tech2, to see if they could enable it, last place I tried (MW Performance, Saltney) Failed miserable, but did confirm it was a new ABS ECU, had no TC program, but they couldn't program it.

So they connect it up, go to the same menu as MW did, but went a screen further, which 'programmed' it, bit of a grand description really, all it was is select engine size and auto / manual.
tech2 then said 'ignition on' then 'engine on' where I noticed it showed electonic rev counter as well (didnt think anything of this at the time)

Took it for a quick 'spin' on some gravel, confirmed TC now working (as bulb is in my glovebox ;) )

Now got up today, started car, idled perfectly instantly, no stalling!
Done this twice now (I go to gym 1st, then work an hour later)

So it looks like fixing the TC may have fixed the idle problem, that has been in existance since he took 1/2 the engine out to do the ABS module.

Now I wouldn't have thought the 2 could have been fixed in the one fell swoop, what do you reckon?

(got em to check my Gearbox software as well, version 5, they really didnt seem keen on updating it though, suggested it 'wasnt a 2 min job')

Yes, it needed the 'Variant' coded to it (same ECU used on a number of engine/gearbox/etc combinations, just needs to be told what yours is). Really easy to do, surprised first garage couldn't.

G/box software V5 is quite old - presumably an 820 ECU, so currently ver 0A is latest iirc.  While it may not be a 2 min job, it is fairly quick, but requires a bit of messing with a PC.  I wonder if they don't have a proper copy of TIS with the dongle  ::)

Yes 820 was mentioned!

I assumed having a tech2 meant you had tis automatically, maybe not then as this was at a breakers.

There is no way the 1st garage couldnt do it now Ive seen it done, just didnt know how / bit frighted of there tech2 maybe.

Will see about a gearbox update when I am next off the dealers....Unless you are about to have a holiday in Chester?
Now theres an idea....TheBoy on tour ;)

(Ive written a quick how to about this bit in test section, thought you could maybe add it to Steve's in the maint section, finishes it off nicely)

Cheers

Just started the car again....perfect!
I CANNOT beleive setting up TC has fixed my (very) cold idle!  but it seems to have!

Reading back, it seemed to appear after changing the ABS ECU, so maybe
would love to know technically why.  :-?

Speed signal defo comes through ABS ECU, and ABS ECU communicates with engine management, so I guess anything is possible....

so..

we need someone with a 98 mv6, and a tech2 to 'unprogram' their abs ecu and see what happens ;)

2nd thoughts, maybe not such a good idea as they are so expensive and a bugger to replace.

Cheers tunnie, yep, tis nice, I love it.

Not possible with standard Tech2 software. Possible to put a new variant code on it, but not a 'blank' one...
