Not sure, sounds like a coolant heater, don't think they were ever standard though, but sometimes 3rd party units fitted to warm coolant (and hence cabin)...

Is your car petrol or diesel? If petrol it sounds like the secondary air pump with the one way valve failed, but not sure why it's running so much.

I think TB is correct......its a cabin heater.....my merc diesel has one.
It really hammers fuel consumption.....knocks it from about 40mpg to about 20mpg when its running.

On my merc theres two conditions when its running.......if the outside temp is below 6/7C and the coolant temp is less than 70C. (So would explain why it comes on when you stop for a bit in this weather)

I once had a prob with it staying on all the time and hence drinking diesel.....the thermostat had got stuck open and coolant temp never reached 70C

Maybe part of a winter pack option for diesels......my merc was factory fitted tho when i took it to an independant merc garage, they had never seen one fitted before  :-/

As to cutting the wires to it......depends if you dont mind being cold until the engine has warmed up....iirc on my merc there is a switch inside the cabin to turn it off......is there a switch inside your omega that you dont know what its for??

I assume you have a post 2000 2.2Dti then, these were fitted for cabin heatup but, it should go off once the engine coolant is up to temperature and or the outside temp is above a certain temp.

Is the outside temp reading working on the dash and what does the engine temp get to?
