Could someone measure the length of V6 plug leads?
« on: 13 December 2006, 15:27:25 »

I have a set of Bosch plug leads for the V6, but they're designed for a Vectra so I want to check if they'll fit the Omega before undertaking the necessary work. There's no reason they shouldn't fit - indeed Magnecor and a few other aftermarket manufacturers sell the same leads for both the Omega and Vectra V6, so the connectors at each end are obviously the same. My worry is that the Vectra may have a slightly shorter path between the DIS and plugs, so unless there's some slack the Vectra Bosch leads may be too short.

If anyone has some spare leads lying around could you measure the distance for each lead from the centre of the cap on each end. If it turns out that these leads fit the Omega I expect it will benefit many others here as they're as good quality as Vauxhall ones but at a fraction of the price.

Cheers
Paul.

They should fit but.......check the length of the boot that fits onto the plug....think they are 5 mm shorter!

Cheers Mark. I might give it a go over the holidays and report back. Knowing how much of a pig this job is I sincerely hope they fit OK! Are the shorter plug boots likely to be a problem (if it turns out they are actually shorter)? How does magnecore and other aftermarket companies who sell the same leads for Vectra and Omega get around the issue?

Its easy to check now......just pop the lead out of number one cylinder and measure the boot length.

The short ones I have seen (and the people who had them were told they would fit) had to be forced onto the plug top whilst deforming the top of the boot where the cable exits.

Some leads (Magnecor) have the cable exiting higher out of the boot so dont cause a problem...

Needless to say I haven't got round to this, decided it makes sense to change the rocker gaskets first.

But I've just had a thought, you say the difference between Omega and Vectra leads is the length of the boot, is this down to differences in the rocker covers?

I am thinking of picking up a pair of Vectra metal rocker covers as I believe they're a direct replacement for the Omega ones (with the exception of the oil filler being in a different place) and being metal they don't warp. So if I fit these, along with new gaskets of course, will the Vectra plug leads fit correctly or is there something else requiring the longer boot on the Omega?

Well there not....they will fit but, you wont be able to put any oil in.......because the filler cap is ina  totaly different place

Any way, its not the covers that fail (contrary to what some think), its the seals and they are normally helped by blocked breathers.

Hmm that could be a problem :(. There are a few posters on the "dark side" who claim to have done this, wonder how they got around the issue.

Is it not the case that the plastic covers sometimes warp, meaning that even with new gaskets you could still end up with leaks?

Do you know if it's the difference in rocker covers that causes the plug lead boot length differences between Vectra and Omega?

Cheers :y

BTW I cleaned out my breathers a few months ago and there was very little gunk in them, so I expect them to still be clear.

Never seen them warp, seen them break (due to poor quality workmanship) and seen them leak quickly after due to poor quality seals....I suspect its the latter that makes people point incorrectly at the cam covers.

Heres a pic of some vectra cam covers...note the position of the oil filler....right below where the main engine loom runs
