Maybe this is one of the times when online shopping isn't best. How about a wander round your local camera dealers and having a play. When I bought my digicam a few years ago my local Jessups were very helpful and let me test a few in the shop to see what I liked. That said if you find one you like there's no harm in a quick online shopping expedition to see how cheap you can get it for.

 ;D ;D ;D

I really hadn't thought about going to a real shop to look at these things. Just goes to show how things change.

I think a visit to Truro is in order at the weekend to look at some cameras 'in the flesh'.

Cheers Captain, the power of lateral thinking.

I went from "wet-film" 35mm SLR to a "point & shoot" digital (Fuji) some 6 years ago, now the technology was different then and the Fuji was well over £300 and what it did then is now available on a £50 camera, so the expensive ones obviously do more ....

My point however is this, 2 years ago I went back to SLR, but digital, with a Canon 350D EOS as I just always wanted control that P&S never allowed.

IMHO, if you have used a decent 35mm SLR you will always miss the ability to use the correct lens and setting for the picture YOU want, rather than what the firmware writer thought you should have.

You're supposed to be making this easier for me.  :(

I know you're right in my heart but my head is telling me that I want something that will make the camera less important than the image. The other thing about a compact is that people take less notice of a little camera than they do of a large SLR and maybe I could get some more natural shots with the compact.

Boy, this is getting harder by the minute.  ;D ;D

Exactly my point. If you are really interested in the finer points of photography, go for an SLR. If, however, you want to take high-quality capture-the-moment photos, go for the compact. You can feel like a real p**t fiddling around with lenses and f-stops at a social occasion. In addition, the chances are that you won't have time to check all the settings and everything else before the moment has gone. Furthermore, subjects are normally far more wary of having a damn great lens in their face than a tiny compact. If you're not thinking of shooting for Vogue, go for the compact, IMHO.  :y

Bottom line is, if I told you those pics I posted were taken on a £500 digital SLR, would you believe me?

They weren't, as you know, but could you honestly tell the difference? If the answer is "No", go for the compact.  :y

Right, that's it, compact camera it is then. Definately, no doubt, for sure. However................

Perhaps I should sleep on it for a day or two.  ;)

Look into my eyes, look into my eyes, you're feeling sleepy, Golfbuddy. When you wake, you'll rush out and buy a Panasonic Lumix.

At 7.00 am, I'll wake you up!  ;D ;D ;D

I still like my over 30 year old all manual 35mm SLR with Tamron 35mm and 200mm lenses.

As to what you take, I can get good shots in still mode on my video camera bit grainy but it is how you take them

I used to have a decent (in its day) mid range digital camera, virtually every setting adjustable.  However, due to its size, I never really took it anywhere, as it wouldn't slip in pocket or her handbag.  Hence why I bought the Ixus.  Since having the Ixus, I have never really missed the manual adjustments, but do occasionally miss the option of telephoto lenses...

For me, however, the compact nature of the camera was more important that manual control.  So you need to decide on your priority...
