Bonnet doesnt open?
« on: 16 January 2007, 21:57:55 »

When I pull the lever in the drivers side to pop the bonnet nothing happens as i release it there’s a little clunk noise that comes from it but still nothing.

Am I missing something?

The car, if you haven’t read my previous post is a M reg elite.

Cable probably needs adjusting. However, to adjust you need to open.

Get a mate to press down on bonnet where catch is whilst you operate the lever...

This has just been discussed over on the Yahoo Omega group - it appears that lots of people have this problem - the solution proposed was (copied):

The procedure is open bonnet get some adjustable grips that fit around the base of the striking pin and undo slightly get screw driver in the pin itself and wind it in half a turn then tighten up the base again trying not to move it out of position then shut bonnet if need be do it again until she opens nice

There appears to be a slight diffrence between pre and post facelifts, see following:

I think there may be a differance between pre and post facelift
bonnets. I have also had the problem of the bonnet release catch
having to be pulled to it's maximum to release the bonnet and even
after cleaning, lubricating all moving parts with 3 in 1 ( don't use
WD 40 ) and then smearing coppa slip and grease around the pin it
still would " stick " After reading these posts I went out this
evening to adjust it as suggested. I found that the spring pin on my
facelift model had two flats on the begining of the taper of the pin
but no slots.Using a 19 mm spanner I wound the cone 1/2 a turn
clockwise as implied, shut it and spent the next hour trying to
release the bonnet.Once opened I then wound it anticlockwise 1 turn (
1/2 turn ac from original position ) and this made a big
differance. It now releases first time everytime.
Hope this helps cause I wouldn't want to have to free that bloody
thing in the dark and rain .....

I am happy to do a Maintenance guide as Project B requires some adjusting but....I dont agree with the above procedure....!

It starts from the wrong point.....you should:

1) Adjust the cable to ensure it has full travel
2) Check the rubber bonnet stops and wind in slightly.
3) Only do the above if the bonnet no longer aligns with the wings!

Just a thought (from a very new Omega owner). On mine you pop the bonnet but it barely moves. You the need to lift it to get at the safety. I.E. at first glance the bonnet release doesn't seem to have worked since the bonnet barely rises.

Remove cover near battery above headlight - you should see bonnet cable. 10mm bolt clamps the outer sheath, so losen, pull the sheath a bit, and tighten...

I've given doing it to mine. I've done it a few times already and it just pulls back through the clamp again.

Did it on mine a year or so ago, been great ever since.

Its possible you may need to adjust bonnet height, maybe the extra stress on the catch (hence cable) causes it to pull through...

I don't have enough enthusiasm for the car to do things again & again. I've surprised myself this week by doing my brake pads and today I've eventually changed the anti-freeze and header tank to get shut of the bloody 'low coolant' message.

Both mine and my dads omega bonnets were doing this so I adjusted the center pins and both have been fine since, definately worth a go.
