Loo-knee the Newbie!!
« on: 31 January 2007, 14:38:36 »

Hi everyone,
I orginally put this into Newbie's section, so putting in here as i was told it was better coverage in here..... So here i am. ;D
I have had six Cavaliers now and am fancying a change to an Omega!
I saw one yesterday (Monday) it was a T reg MV6, black leather, full service history, 11 months MOT, 89,000 miles and looks gorgeous to be honest but thought i would do a little homework before buying it.....
The guy showed me all the history and reciepts for things he has had done, he also told me and showed me on the trip computer that it is doing 30.1 mpg, is this right? My Mrs drives a Classic 3.9 Range Rover and only gets about 15mpg....(although she doesn't drive slow!)
What things have i got to check out on this car? he wants £1650 ono is that a good price? says his mrs left and needs the money, but you never now do ya!
Any help guys will be appreciated.
Thanks

Sounds like a cracking car for sale there, price is spot on for a dealer. Should be able to get him down to £1,400

One receipt you MUST, MUST look for it cambelt WITH tensioners replaced.

It MUST be done every 40k so it must have a had a recent change, other than that sounds good.

30.1 average from a 3.0? Is it a manual or auto?? Its possible however its last run must have been a motorway thrash, as generally they tend to get between 25 / 30 on average.

They can do low 30's on a motorway run...

As has been said - cambelt AND tensioners (critical) every 40k/4yrs. Don't take anyones word its been done, you need documented proof.

The MID (computer thingie) showing 30mpg? Either, its just got back from a motorway run since reset, or its programmed wrong.  Press both buttons on wiper stalk together for 3s should give some numbers - I think top right ones should be 50 or 52 depending on g/box.

That's a good price if it's as good as described and has a manual gearbox. Not an unreasonable fuel consumption figure either, I'm averaging over 27 MPG in mine over the last few months and it regularly sees over 6,000 RPM. Reasonable amount of M-way driving though.

Gotta say the MPG of the range rover is pretty pathetic, but then taking what's basically a military battlefield chariot and putting it onto the road is never going to produce good results ;) My 840 does (slightly) more MPG than that and that's a 4.4 driven hard and barely sees a motorway these days!
