Yes a very nice man brought me home.  I went to a meeting 30 miles or so away today and took a passenger - so radio turned down and stopped to let traffic pass in a small village.  Then I heard the clanking and rattling from under the engine.  I pulled over and had a listen - not good.  So I drove a couple of miles and pulled into an MOT station - young man stuck his head in, rubbed his chin, poked the belt and said he'd have to strip it all down to see what it was.  So I drove off (nicely) and stopped 3 or 4 miles up the road at my meeting and called Green Flag to take me home.

Belt changed at 38,788 miles - now on 43,000. Genuine Vx kit and rollers on 21 June 2006.

This was 3m before I joined this forum and water pump was not replaced. Oh 'dangle berries'  >:(

BTW I know nowt about cars but when I heard the clanking today - I just knew  :-/  Thanks OOF you may well have saved me an engine rebuild  :y

I really should do mine, the whole lot - Pump, tensioners and belt. Just can't afford it at the mo what with running the Senator.  :(

Had a new belt on at 83k now at 98k, I suspect the pump was never changed!

I did mine at a similar mileage and did not do the water pump - I know it makes sense while you're there etc, but as it was done by Vx it would have meant lots of extra dosh... my point is that the pump can normally wait to the 80k change, if it did go at 43k it is just bad luck, nothing you should kick yourself for.

As for the noise, if it is the tensioner then the car should also feel under-powered - this is what happened to my on the previous meega, the car drove but felt like it was going on 4 cyl not 6 - pressumably due to the timing being slightly out after the tensioner failed.

Surely there would be some come back from the garage - repairs as a whole is usually warranted for 3 months only, but the part itself should have 1 year?

Chopsdad if you can prove its the waterpump as this what it sounds like had a similar situation when I got mine, do you think you will get a garage to do it or will you be giving it ago.

As others have said try without the aux belt on as it could be the aux belt tensioner bearing or something running off the aux belt causing the noise and not your waterpump.
