Strange Behaviour
« on: 13 January 2007, 17:07:15 »

Hello again chaps.

The omega is displaying some puzzling behaviour. It first started to cut out or the engine management light would come on, quite a while ago. So I read the codes which said it was the crank sensor and the air flow sensor. Air flow sensor was apparently a common false reading when crank sensor failed, so replaced the crank sensor (well, got someone else to do this!). BUT, the car still cuts out, or sometimes just loses power and stutters, then comes back on to song again. When it is playing up it will idle so low that it cuts out, and may idle really high when first started. The air flow sensor, crank sensor and cam sensor? have been replaced; but it is still playing up.

Any thoughts??

Could it be idle control valve?

Any help greatly appreciated!

Does it just do this at idle? No power loss otherwise?

Can you re-read the codes? Tho were the codes reset when these parts were changed?
As no point in rereading old codes.

No, during normal driving i.e. power will just drop suddenly whilst driving along, or when at a junction I will put my foot down to go and just get nothing

I can't re-read the codes at the mo either  :(

mate, i had a 3.0 elite on an M auto and had this fault.  Vauxhall screwed me with various repairs that cost me over 2k and still didn't sort it.  Be careful with this since, one prob i had was that is caused the cat converter to fail too costing 250 extra.

My remedy was new set of ht leads although vauxhall stated that they checked each lead seperately but the fault still existed.  With that excluded, i went on to have sensors, sparks, gaskets, etc changed.  The list went on and on and on, all without sorting the problem.  Finally, I insisted on new leads and this solved it.  I can't remember how much the leads were but i wish i had them done early on!

Good luck mate, don't let vauxhall rip you.  Don't let them bull you with one lead at a time, insist all leads replaced before excluding them.

Could be the EGR valve if it cuts out when stopping, but wait for someone more knowledgeable to comment. I have a Air Mass Meter fault too and after replacing it, the new one wouldn't give power at 50 mph but the old one runs fine.  Most opinions here point to an air leak - I would also clean out your breathers and throttle body if you havn't already as this may cure the high tickover.  If you do get garage to read codes again ask if there is a newer version of the ECU software available that may remove and known problems.  :y

Just read the codes again,

73        Air Flow Sensor (AFS)        Low voltage

But, the last time it cut out I'm pretty sure auto gearbox something or other came on the display....?

Really confused as the air flow sensor has been changed?

(could running out of petrol cause any of these symptoms?)

Also, could it be low gearbox fluid? Car is at roughly 165k miles, and sometimes it seems to get it wrong when changing gear resulting in a harsh, thudding gearchange...

That shouldn't cause it to cut out, but if in doubt, there's a good guide on this forum that Mark did to check the level...

More likely an air leak on the intake system somewhere, or ICV playing up.  The code is flagging up as the ECU has a rough idea of how much air it should be using from other sensors, but the MAF is saying its using less...

Did you use a genuine Vauxhall crank sensor?

I'm sure I remember reading on here somewhere that pattern parts can cause problems.

I had a similar promlem on a 2.0 vectra.  Took advise and removed the idle air control valve, cleaned it till it was gleaming and changed gasket (couple of quid).  This solved the problem.  Not as confident with omega's but as it's cheap to do it couldn't hurt.

Good luck.
