Fuel Tank Leak Advice Needed
« on: 05 February 2007, 12:40:43 »

Filled the tank up Saturday evening car wasn't used after filling and Yesterday I was met with a nice puddle of petrol under the car.

Car wasn't parked on a flat so the drivers side was lower than the passenger side.

Looked underneath to see petrol running down the back of the tank from the top and dripping to the floor.

I'm assuming this is the valve on top is kaput.

Lost best part of quarter of a tank so was not happy yesterday.

Any Ideas on whether this can be changed or would it be a complete new tank needed.

My tank is leaking too. When I removed the inspection plate in the boot, I found that the metal circle plate at the top of the tank (where the pipes and stuff go into) was badly corroded and damp.

I ordered a new metal plate and gasket from autovaux in November for about £35. I'm still waiting for the parts so don't know whether that's going to fix it or not yet  :-/

I didn't think the flap should be air-tight - isn't it normal for it to leak if the vehicle is tilted?  :o

I haven't looked under the inspection plate in the boot yet so not sure if its a similar problem if not the same.

Shall have a look later is it a bolted down cover or does it need prising out?

The tank itself is plastic, so that rules out corrosion on that. But the plate is metal.

Just lift the boot carpet and unscrew the inspection plate mate.

I hope so, I'm guessing going direct to vx for the rubber seal will be the quickest option, going off what bestseany says about autovaux.

Good Luck sean fingers crossed they dont keep you waiting too much longer.

Does anyone have part number and a price if possible.

Just contacted Vx about the seal and they said you cant get them seperately and so a whole new tank would be needed to the tune of £358 inc VAT :o

If there is a part number it would be much appreciated as the Vx guy seems confident you cant get the seal on its own.

Well I did as suggested last night and removed the access cover to check around the top.

The plate in the middle is pretty corroded and I moved my hand around the edge of Black part which i'm assuming screws in place with the seal underneath.

Unfortunately though I never found any wet areas under there and my finger tips just got coated in black nastyness I'm assuming dirt and hummed of petrol. So there could well be a leak from there even though it was dry when I checked.

I checked what I could of the two pipes running into the to metal plate and they seemed fine, but better checked whilst up in the air, thats my next move.

Sounds like the same problem with mine. With the plate being corroded, I found it a good idea to change that aswell.

It will probably only look wet whilst it's actually leaking out, as petrol evaporates quickly in the air so it wouldn't stay around for long.

At least you're a step closer to finding the cause.

Have you recieved the parts yet from autovaux bestseany :question

Piccy nabbed from net

The piccy above shows the circular piece I'm assuming is the petrol pump and to my understanding petrol was running down the back of the tank directly behind the pump itself.

I'm guessing the circular peice twists off would reseating be worth ago.

Would you go with Vx on what they say a new tanks needed, they even suggested I book it in for them to investigate, my thoughts were no chance.

No, I haven't had the bits yet mate. I should call them later and chase it up really, as I can't put more than £30 of petrol in at the moment.

I wanted to change the whole metal circle plate and the gasket for it. With it being so badly corroded, I thought it might be possible that it's leaking because of that. The petrol pump connects to the underneath of the metal plate as the plate as a bracket that holds it in place.

My leak comes from the front edge of the tank (facing the engine) directly in the middle.

Sounds to me exactly the same problem and seeping from the same place as yours, I shall have to give autovaux a call myself as they obviously know more than my local vx parts department peeps.
