Thanks to eveyone for your friendly and welcoming comments.  I wish I was joining this site under happier circumstances.
But as sod's law would dictate I have a problem.

My gearbox on 2.6 V6 Auto is locking into safe mode and the lights on my gearshift look like blackpool alluminations, or it lights 1 up when it's acctually in 3.  Have checked oil level and topped it up.  It took about 1 litre (why couldn't they just put  a dipstick on it instead of just behind the wheel)!!!   Anyway, oil is nicely topped up but this problem is still there,  Do any of you omega wizards have any suggestions or advise.  (Setting fire to it not an option in my financial situation, but don't think I haven't thought about it)

Try removing and cleaning the selector switch mounted on the passenger side of the gearbox as a starter......

I will have a go at that.  Could this explain the weird lights on the gearshift.  Is there a chance that the problem is not knackered electrics then?

Sorry, should have asked!!!

Is this easy to do.  I'm not mechanic....  Quite technically minded though and don't mind getting my hands dirty.

Is it something a keen novice could do?

As Mark says, initial thing is to clean up selector switch mounted on side of gearbox - this is a common cause for erratic behaviour of the little LEDs next to gearstick.

If it is completely knackered, I seem to recall a new switch is quite expensive

Well, managed to get the selector switch off.  Took it apart and it was full of gunky crap.  Have cleaned it out but it looks like there is a fare bit of ware and corrosion damage to the metal contacts/strips.  Hasn't cured the fault anyway.  It certainly looks like the likely cause of my problems.  So, next question...... Where could I get a second hand selector switch from, or does anyone have one for sale.  If anybody can help me (not a shrink.... I'm too far gone for that now), I would be eternally grateful.

You're probably best trying to find a Vauxhall breakers near to you, or there's a few on ebay usually.

I think a new one from Vauxhall is nearly £200.

  dont know if this will help  i had a auto and all the lights lit
up and went in to limp mode all i had was 1st and reverse with power
 after many fags being stressed i decided to have a look in the fuse box
 and noticed a fuse had blown once replaced car was spot on

Thanks mick, I will have a look at the fuses.  I'm pretty sure it's the selector switch by the ware inside it but I'll give anything a go at this point.... Maybe I'll get lucky and will just be a fuse.....  God I hope so!!!

Don't suppose you know which fuse it was???

Checked fuses and everything looks ok...  I'm not lucky enough for it to be something that simple i guess  

But it was worth a check, so thanks for the info.  Will just have to pray that it is the selector switch and nothing more serious. :-/
