V6 - 100k Oil Changes
« on: 19 February 2007, 16:36:52 »

Firstly, Hi!

I just got my first Omega and am very happy, however it has absolutely no history whatsoever.

I've just ordered my cambelt kit, water pump, auxilary drive belt + pollen & air filters for it.  Jobs being done Sunday by a local mechanic who does a mates Omega - I just don't feel confident enough to attempt it on my own yet.

However, tonight I'll be doing an oil change + new oil filter.  Can anyone tell me if I should be using an Engine flush, or is it too risky?  If I should use one, any reccomendations - or more impotantly - ones that I should definitely NOT use?!

Many thanks - and so far this forum is an absolute gem of a resource for Omega owners.  :)

Cheers,

Chris.

Steer clear of flushing crap.

Just change the oil and filter regularly, for VX 10-40 Semi Synth...   :)

Welcome Chris.

A few quick oil & filter changes using low-cost (though not sub-standard! e.g. using Vauxhall semi-synth as opposed to Mobil-1...) oil are a far safer way of cleaning an old engine - as you seem to suggest yourself, flushing and engine that isn't used to it could shift sludge around and kill it.

Also, clean the breathers...

Chris, we have several 'partys' going in in Brackley Northants this weekend. If you have the time I am sure we can fit you in.. my cambelt on the 2.2 is getting done as is a V6 one.

Plenty of room, see "Cambelt Party" in General chat  :y

Tsk Just no dedication!  ;) Who could pass on an offer of being invited to an Omega  party rather than spend a birthday week-end in a hotel?  ;)  ;D  ;D

For oil, just do lots of oil changes, rather than flush - I mean at 250m intervals, gradually stretching out after each one. Miles better than flushing. If you can get access to tradeclub, cost around £10 per oil change for genuine Vauxhall semi synth and filter...

As for cambelt, ensure the guy has a v6 cambelt locking/timing kit.  Whatever he may say, it cannot be done without one.  If he implies you can, don't let him touch it.

Cheers for all the responses - first change is done, only got about a litre in my hair before I managed to scramble out from underneath!

Stinks a bit - guess this is where the oil that went down the side of the crankcase is burning off - got chance to have a good look under there and it would appear that my rocker cover gaskets need sorting and the breathers all cleaned - oil everywhere.

And yes, I am weak for choosing the mrs over the cambelt party, shocking behaviour!  ;)
