Flip Flap Wheel Noise!!
« on: 19 February 2007, 14:38:31 »

Hi, I have an Omega 2.5 V6 [P]. The engine is sound but...

1. There is a flip flap sound from the drivers side front wheel area as pulling away and steering appears to increase the noise, and once up and away it becomes a quicker duller sound.

2. Whenever I break lightly the car sounds like a train doing an emergency stop!

3. After repeated acceleration or cornering for a short period of time, a loud whinning continuous sound comes from the front wheel(s)...i am assumimng this is the wheel bearings?

The real mystery is that I took the car into KwikFit for a 'free' brakes test and after having the car for half a day, and after driving the car round themselves they couldn't find anything?????????? IT IS SO AUDIBLE YOU MUST HEAR THE CAR BEFORE YOU SEE IT!

Your knowledgeable comments would be gratefully appreciated...otherwise it looks like a trip to my local VX dealership with a wheelbarrow of cash!!!

It does sound like a very poorly wheel bearing...

Can you jack the wheel up and check for play by wiggling it in the 12 and 6 Oclock positions and then the 3 and 9 Oclcok positions, if its wheel bearing then both will have play....as a final test, get somebody to press the brake pedal and repeat the test, the play should be reduced.

Front wheel bearing changes are actualy a doddle......with the hub assembly being about 40ish quid.

I can confirm that it is actually a fairly simple job after seeing Marks_DTM do it.  Will need a big socket for the hub bolt, and a nice long breaker bar or scaffold pole....

:( I'll have to start phoning the motor factors first before I go to the dealers. Must be a bad habit I've got into.

Tx Fellas!

So its the wheel bearings then? a big spanner & scaffold job  lol. Think i'll leave this to a mechanic. The last time I did any repairs on a car was when i stripped my Mini 1275 GT engine down and took the rocker box off, the cylinder block and tried to clean the cylinder head gasket in the street(using a blunt chisel to scarpe off the semi stuck gasket!) with all the con rods dangling out the gubbins like a giant octopus lol then once i thought i put it together half the rods weren't it properly and after misfiring all of them got bent and warped! LOL. So on that testimony Im sure you'll agree its best left to a mechanic.

Cheers

To take a quote from Mr Clarkson the wheel bearings need lots of torques when you tighten them.
