First omega and got a few problems.
« on: 24 February 2007, 21:33:24 »

Just picked up my first omega today, it's a 1996 2.5 GSL with 102k on the clock,  paid practically nothing for it as i bought it with a few known niggles which i could use some help with.

Firstly,  I have an oil leak, when i picked the car up and the garage drove it round it started straight away, he oil light wasn't on but when i checked the oil level it wasn't showing anything on the dipstick, he topped it up for me although not with very much oil.  The car got me home perfectly ok (about 80 miles)  the light dind't come one and there were no nasty noises.  However, when it had been parked on the drive for about half 10 minutes i noticed oil dripping from underneath.  It has pooled on the lip where the sump pan attaches to the sump and is dripping from the front side of the sump at the passenger side, the oil has costed pretty much all of the front and sides of the sump.

I'm aware of the problems with the rocker cover gaskets and this is whet i originally thought the oil leak was most likely to be but now i'm not so sure as the rest of the engine is clean and the oil is only coving the lower part of the sump.

Is it most likely to be the prevously mentioned gaskets or could it be the seal between the sump and pan that has failed?

Secondly, the electric sunroof switch is knackered, it will sort of open the sunroof but ti takes you 10 minutes to close it again.  As before i know this is a known problem but would just like to know if it's astraight forward repair or is it lots of faffing about.

So far my impressions of this car have been good, compared to my 1.6 escort i've had fr the past 4 years the omega is like driving a really quick bus as it's so bloody big.  I was a bit dissapointed with the level of equipment on the car - no leccy windows in the back and no A/C but it's nothing major.

I would just like some pointers on the above 2 problems.  I know my escort inside out as i've had it in bits so many times but i now feel like i'm starting from the beggining again.

Any help is very much appreciated

Oh, and sorry for the long post.

Sober?  Pissed now and starting again at my daughters party 10:30 tomorrow morning  :y

Could be the oil pressure switch leaking.  Only about £5 from Vx

I was going to suggest oil pressure switch but arent the V6's prseeure switch located on the front of the engine and NOT behind the oil pump like the 4 pots !

I had exactly the same problem, just lower engine getting wet, but owning a 2.2 - 4 pot it was the oil switch !

Clean off all the old oil with some degreaser, especially around the oil pressure sensor then you should get some idea of where its coming from.
Oil pressure sensor can be loose and sometimes the sensor itself develops a leak.

If it's steadily dripping when the engine's stopped it's either remnants of oil that has leaked out when it's running (does it get worse when running?) or it's dripping from somewhere below the oil line, and the sump  pan seal and drain plug are probably about the only candidates (assuming the sump hasn't taken a wallop and cracked!).

As Matchless said, first port of call is to clean it up and see if it gets more obvious.

Check the plug wells anyway, it can't do any harm and it will rule the gaskets out if they are dry  :y

Once i've gotten a new set of torx sockets i'll pull everything to bits properly and have a better look.  This is the first car i've had that uses this many torx bolts, never needed a set of sockets before as i've only ever had fords.

I did only check 2 of the plug wells and they did look  clean but i'll check the rest of them this weekend, will also get some gunk and dig out the pressure washer to clean out the underside of the engine.  Aren't cars fun :)

RE: The Sunroof

Turn the knob all the way to closed and push it in and hold it. The sunroof will cyle oddly. Release the knob when the roof closes. It should operate normally after that. Hopefully.
