Rear window obstacle detection?
« on: 27 February 2007, 09:02:33 »

Went to close the rear window this morning and it stopped half way up and started to go down again. This happened several times and wouldn't close. Of course it was tipping down with rain as well! [smiley=smiley.gif]

Finally got it closed by closing the window an inch at a time with the up switch.

Is there obstacle detection on the rear windows? I can't see anything that would foul the window (mind you it was raining so didn't look too hard), or is there another cause for this?

Anyone else had a similar problem and found the fault?

My rears do this as well. I haven't done any investigation. I just assumed that, as they don't get a lot of use, they have stiffened up a bit and are triggering the obstacle detection falsely.

The friction between the window and the rubber/felty runners can be enough, to cause this.
Try some PTFE spray down the edges to see if this helps.
Can someone please confirm that PTFE spray is the stuff?
Hope this helps

That was one of my thoughts about the rubber. The rear windows are almost never used (not like on my old car that didn't have Air con!) and have probably stiffened up.

Someone at work suggested Silcone grease, but I'm sure it would just end up with streaks on the window. I'll try opening and closing them a few times to "excerise" the rubber a bit.

I was hoping that it wasn't electrical (an therefore expensive).

I'm assuming this was using the window one touch function perhaps you need to do a reset.

Maybe worth ago.

Mine has the same problem, i think i have read (told by some one with EPC ;)) that it was a service issue with Omegas and the work around was checking the mechanism inside the door for lubrication.

Perhaps one of the peeps with EPC can confirm. :)

Clean the window inside and out, clean the side runners, I use a little neat Fairy Liquid on a cloth, then lubricate the rubber as suggested.

Should be OK then.

Will give the clean a go first as it's the easiest. Will wait til the weekend though as it isn't a biggy now that the bloody thing is closed. Would have been though if it hadn't shut and had kept raining!

Will report back on success for those with the same problem.

PTFE spray is the lubricant of choice....silicon grease should NOT be used as it will for ever be smeared across the glass!

.....its not the mechanism (they are a cable drive on the rear), its the crudd etc on the rubber guides.....they clean up nicely with a toothbrush.

The auto open function is present on all four windows and the sunroof, it detects something stopping the closure (i.e. a childs head!) by monitoring the stall current in the motor and re-opens the window.....
