How do I remove wiper arm ?
« on: 24 January 2007, 13:25:58 »

All I want to do is take the wiper arm off the splines to re-position it.
In mucky driving conditions vision through the area nearest the drivers side screen pillar is obscured about 2" wider than it should be.
The problem is getting the arm of the splines once the nut is re-moved. I can't prise it off without putting stress on the spline mechanism/bearing.

Do I need some sort of puller...or is there another way ???

They can be tricky. Watch you don't break the plastic scuttle.

I got mine off with penetrating oil and a half inch spanner as a lever. The open end of the spanner fits round the shaft. Not a great solution but it did the job.

yep, tricky and fiddly, delicate perseverance to get it off. As mentioned gently lever it out of position.

I've tried the spanner...but not with oil.
Failing that a trip to Machine Mart is on the cards
Definately a "softly,softly" approach tho'...that's why I bottled out on the spanner method.
Cheers mee deers.

The initial method I use is to slacken the nut and then push and pull the point where the wiper arm hinges (not excessively, just repeatedly)

Agreed.....pushing it towards the screen definately seems to do the trick  :y

I bought one of those pullers, not from machine mart but it looked identical. Think it was a laser tools branded one. Tried to use it on a stiff wiper, all that happened was that the legs on the bottom of the puller bent outwards and continuing to turn the knob just forced the puller off the wiper!!

Seem to remember I then gave up on the puller and went for the idea of lifting the wiper blade until it locks in the up position, then wiggling the fixed part of the arm as described ... and that DID work !!!  :)

I used plusgas on mine (looked like they hadn't been off for a while);
left them a while;
and got Mark to look meanacingly at them.
- with his right knack, they just about fell off themselves.

One of mine was seized on. Bucket loads of WD40 and left for 20-30 minutes. Whacked it a couple of times with a rubber hammer to shock it loose then just pulled it off with virtually no effort.

That's what happened to me on Friday taking the wipers of my Astra "shed".
I've had success by gently levering the bottom of the arm with a small adjustable spanner.
