someone didn't do their homework
« on: 14 September 2007, 23:02:50 »

Friend of mine has a small garage just outside Plymouth, today he had a prefacelift 2.5V6 miggy turn up with 'headgasket failure'

Took one look under the bonnet and she sludge was everywhere around the header tank!!!! however this is where it gets sneaky.

Owner had just bought it, and paid a reasonable sum for a car in good order, the prev owner had changed the oil so that looked nice and clean but relied on the prospective buyer not checking the header tank, first time it overheated off came the cap and the sludge went everywhere......

New owner now faced with a substantial bill as there is no record of cambelt change and the prospect of a replacement oil cooler.......

I put a bid in for it, let's just say it was a lot less than it was bought for a few days ago;D

I suppose the owner bought it privately and not from a dealer...?

Bought a car, without looking in the header tank? Asking for trouble really...

It's not the end of the world though, change the oil cooler, and do a DIY cambelt change, and should be good to go...

Unfortunately Crazydad - the responsibility is that of the buyer to check it over, not of the seller to look for and point out any faults :y

The seller may have genuinely not looked in the header tank either...

I could accept that if the previous owner hadnt done an oil change before hand :o :o

now do you not think that that is slightly incriminating??

so how would you feel if this had happened to you??

I know that going around and using a little over the top force is not liked by many people but i dont think that you would just sit back and say " oh well expensive mistake"
i too would prefer to talk this sort of thing over, but to say that it was his own fault for not checking is a little harsh.

we all have to work hard for our Money.

In my personal opinion, expecting a potential owner to check a header tank isn't harsh - however having seen the emphasis on the fact he did an oil change beforehand, I agree that alarm bells are starting to go off!!

if it had happened to me i would not have been happy, i wouldhave been speaking to the prev owner and pointing out that the car was maybe not in the 'good condition' that was originally advertised and that the oil change just prior to sale could have been done in order to assist in the 'good condition' sale.

I would be very nice about things as there is a degree of responsibility on the buyer as well as the seller, i know private sales dont have a warranty but paying very close to 1K for a car with a knackered oil cooler is taking the wee a little.

6 of one half dozen of the other, but i would be looking for some money back to cover the impending garage bill
