Help power loss
« on: 08 March 2007, 10:22:33 »

Hi all I have 1999 2.0 16v omega estate auto 90k

car seems to be dying a lot. When it first started it was very sluggish so called a mechanic out? He said it was the fuel pump. Had that replaced £400 then worked fine for a bit then started again. Took to a Garage they said there was oil in the spark plugs due to rocker cover leak so had that changed £400. Ok For a while then it started again but slightly different when starting in the morning for the first 1/2 mile drove ok then revs dropped stalled restarted revs go up and down abit stalled about 3 or 4 Times or kept it going by left foot braking quite a skill! Then after about 2 or 3 miles worked ok
Then rattly exhaust so had complete new system including cat £360 now runs fine sometimes then other times
Feels like its being strangled lots blue smoke from rear you can get rid of it by sticking your foot Down but it keeps coming and going. then go out in it again runs fine any advice would be great

Because it’s driving me nuts and as cost me over £1000 so far and still it doesn’t run properly

Did they clean out the breather pipes when the cam covers were done? This is the cause of the problem in the first place.

When it dies is it a misfire or does it just grind to a halt? Could it be that the plug leads were damaged by the oil leak but not replaced?

Has the engine management light come on at all?

Sounds like your rocker cover is full of gunk and blocked.  Part of the breather curcuit on the 2.0 is in the rocker cover which if not cleaned can block and cause build up in breather pipes.  This is turn can cause crankcase pressure to build and inevitably if your oil is not new it will be pushed into the combustion chamber past the oil rings.  I had the exact same prob on a veccy with the same engine. I suggest you do the following which should only take about 2 hours:

1) Take off rocker cover and remove gasket, if it is not plasticy then you can clean it and re-use.
2) Remove all breather pipes and flush with carb cleaner, then blast with water, then WD40 to remove water, check the breather pipe union on the throttle body to see if it is blocked.  Use a cotton bud or similar if so.
3) Using rags or paper towels block all but the large pipe union(fly wheel end) and in turn remove each plug and blast through with carb cleaner so that by the end every conduit on the cover has been blasted. You will need ALOT of carb cleaner for this and you will see LOTS of gunk come out.  As part of the over/under pressure valve system inside is made of rubber you need to get rid of the carb cleaner quickly so remove all plugs and use a hose to flush through all conduits with water, then lots of WD40 to get rid of the water.
4) As a good measure I normally leave the cover somewhere warm for a few hours to evaporate any water that remains.
5) Reassemble checking all pipes are properly connected and take on a short run 5-10 miles which will circulate any crap that has got into the system into the filter, warm up the oil for the next part and help burn off any residual oil in your exhaust.
6) change oil as there may be some residual carb cleaner which will eat your rubber seals

7) You might want to think about changing spark plugs if you have been burning oil, I would change your HT leads too if they have been cooking in oil. If you do it all yourself it should cost no more than £80 depending on your source for parts.

You might find some residual oil burning through the exhaust for a short time but you will notice a remarked difference not long after.  Mine went from a stalling, smokey, sluggish car to clean, responsive, racey car after this job.

Jobs a gudun!!
