replacing brake pipes
« on: 17 March 2007, 08:32:14 »

I am having trouble replacing the front to rear brake pipe, the union undid easily in the engine bay but at the rear of the car I cant undo the pipe into the pressure reducing valve. It is very badly corroded, I have tried soaking in plus gas for three days to no avail and the union nut is starting to deteriate. I am loathe to apply heat as its very near the petrol tank.  I have tried to undo the next union along the line but that to is badly corroded. I cant even get the reducing valve out to to drill and remove the faulty union. It looks like I will have to replace the complete rear brake pipe assembly including going right back to the rear discs. It seems like a lot of work and outlay on new parts just because 1 union will not undo. Is there a mechanics trick that I need to know ?
never had this many problems when I replaced the oi cooler and cambelt. Im really cheesed off.

Are you using a proper brake pipe spanner? like a hexagonal ring spanner with a slot in it?
An open ended wont do and will only round off the corners.

You could try tightening the nut first to see if that releases the corrosion.
I have had some sucess with "Rust Flash" it is a refrigerant spray and penetrant combined.......the refrigerant causes the metal to contract so cracking the corrosion.

Although if they're really tight the spanners will still have a tendancy to flex & spread.

Yes, I even cut the offending pipe and used a special socket set on it. that had flats not star internals. After struggling this morning the flats rounded off, so I now have the problem further down the line to remove the pressure reducer to drill and and use a thread extractor.

will pop off to halfords for some of that freeze stuff and try that.
